Top 10 Baseball Distractions

8. NHL: Dallas Stars @ Washington Capitals (Tuesday 7pm from Verizon Center live on Comcast SportsNet), Washington Capitals @ New Jersey Devils (Friday 7pm from Newark live on NHL Network/Comcast SportsNet), New Jersey Devils @ Washington Capitals (Saturday 7pm from Verizon Center live on NHL Network/Comcast SportsNet)

You think you’re a Caps fan? These Vancouver Canucks fans are better than you…and have much less of a life!

7. Boxing: Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez (Saturday 9pm from Las Vegas live on HBO PPV); ShoBox-Austin Trout vs. Frank LoPorto (Friday 11:05pm from El Paso, TX live on Showtime)

Fitting that the country will care (at least briefly) about the sport of boxing again for a moment this week after the passing of “Smokin” Joe Frazier.

Thanks for “The Fight of the Century”, Joe. It was WAY more memorable than “The Game of the Century”…

6. Mixed Martial Arts: UFC on FOX-Cain Velasquez vs. Junior Dos Santos (Saturday 9pm from Anaheim live on FOX); Bellator Fighting Championships 57 (Saturday 7pm from Orillia, Ontario, Canada live on MTV2)

They’re calling this “The most exciting debut on FOX since Greg The Bunny” in television circles. (That might not actually be true.)

I’m stoked for this fight personally, even if it doesn’t have the hype of a “Fight of the Next Century.”

Elsewhere in MMA, Andrei Arlovski fought a local grocery store bagger (his name was Travis Fulton) and things were AWFUL until there was one second left in the fight…

5. High School Football: MPSSAA Playoffs-4A North Semifinals Perry Hall @ Poly (Friday 7pm), Paint Branch @ Catonsville (Friday 7pm); 3A North Semifinals Digital Harbor @ North Harford (Friday 7pm), Franklin @ Aberdeen (Friday 7pm); 2A North Semifinals Dundalk @ Edmondson (Saturday 6pm Poly HS), Lake Clifton @ Chesapeake-Baltimore County (Friday 7pm CCBC Essex); 1A South Semifinal Southside @ Dunbar (Saturday 12pm Poly HS); 1A North Semifinals Reginald Lewis @ Overlea (Friday 7pm) Northwestern @ New Town (Friday 7pm); 1A East Semifinal Havre de Grace @ Perryville (Friday 7pm)

Oh. This is awkward. This is the part where you’re supposed to chant back “Chomp Chomp Chomp Chomp.” I can’t believe you didn’t know that.

I’ll of course be pulling for my beloved Perry Hall Gators Friday night against the Engineers, sadly hoping we can send Roger Wrenn into early retirement.

In a completely (and I can’t possibly stress COMPLETELY enough) unrelated story, I know someone who is about to forced into the latest early retirement in football history…
