Lets play the what if game

A few "what ifs?" to ponder...what would you do?

1. It's June 15th...the Orioles are 5 games over 500...they are 2 games out of a Wildcard....What trades do you make?

A. Trade Sherrill, who has 25 saves, pitched great, but Chris Ray is back next year...and James Hoey is tearing up AAA.

B. Trade Brian Roberts for 3 top prospects including a stud SS

C. Trade Melvin Mora to the Dodgers for a 2B prospect and a Pitching prospect

D. Forget that...we are going to add a bat ourselves and go for it.

2. Ravens pick 8th...the following players are available..who do you take?

A. Matt Ryan

B. Sedric Ellis

C. Ryan Clady

D. Leodis McKelvin

E. Trade Down and still get a player you need.

3. Ravens just took Matt Ryan number 8...who goes

A. McNair

B. Boller

C. Smith

D. Don't make me choose

4. Last one....If only one team can win a championship this year...who would you take and why?

A. Orioles

B. Ravens

C. TERPS Men

I would take the Orioles...I think it would be one of the greatest stories ever in the history of Baltimore sports and create more excitment then the other 2...The Ravens will win again in the future...the Terps will not win til Garyland moves on....so I go with the O's....ahhh what-if...

I would take the Caps. They've tormented me for 20 years. You still trade as many vets as you can if you're the O's. Stay the course. And if Ryan is there you get him. This team will never win a Super Bowl until it picks the right young QB.

1. D - 4.A . These two tie together. If the Os are in contention near midseason, they would be silly to waste a chance to contend down the stretch after 10 years of losing. MacPhail could certainly find a way to add a piece or two while still being true to the rebuilding effort. No doubt in my mind. ........ 2. A - lets get our QB. It is painfully obvious that you need a stud QB to win in the NFL., and 3. C - Sorry, Troy, but it has to be done. The Ravens need to see if McNair does in fact have 1 more year in him, and if he does not, Boller has shown himself to be a capable backup, which Troy Smith, even after playing meaningless late-season games, has yet to prove.

question 1. definitely keep sherril (closer for the next 5 or so years). I like Chris Ray but either use him as a set up/situational pitcher or trade him for another need. So for an answer, i say D add a bat kinda like the O's did back in 95/96 with Bobby Bonilla, someone who can contribute to the success of the O's. So much excitement for the first week and a couple days of baseball
question 2. either ryan or any defensive player
question 3. either mcnair or smith.
question 4. probably the Orioles this year-would start a whole new renaissance for the team...that would bring in Texeixeira next year and possibly another top guy or 2.

1). I have to go with E. wait until the end of July, then lets talk. If they are 5 games over .500 and 2 games out of the Wildcard at the end of July, then I say D. GO FOR IT, because some of these young guys are going to have career years. Look we went down this road back in 2005 when they were 13 games over .500 in June, and then they started to collapse around the All-Star break.

2) D. McKelvin. Need CB help. Rolle needs to go to nickle

3) C. Smith is outta here

4) A. Orioles. Without a doubt. What better way to stick it to the Skankees and their $219 million payroll and RedSux and their $180 million, but to win the World Series with a $67 million payroll. I'm a huge Ravens fan, but it's been 25 years for the Os.

Rick end of July is too late to start a trade...need to decide in Mid June to start some discussion...but way to add to the discussion, THANKS!

Ken,

If it's what would I do, then still E) do nothing. I'll bide my time and watch the price for Roberts go up, or plummet if he gets hurt. Hey no guts, no glory.

Re: Lets play the what if game By Craig on 4/9/2008 5:15 PM

1 - Weren't the O's in this position a few years back, looking in good position in June, then ended up in last place? Ditch Mora and Roberts for prospects.

2 - Go tackle or corner.

3 - Boller. He may be an OK career backup, but its just not working out here. McNair could rebound with rest, and if nothing else step in for spot duty if a starter goes down.

4 - D. None of the above. Seriously, why did I just comment about Baltimore sports? You're welcome KZ.

Re: Lets play the what if game By KS on 4/9/2008 5:15 PM

1) If they have a shot at the wildcard, then you go for it. The fans here have suffered to long to not go for it. Of course this doesn't matter since they will be 10 games out by then.

2) Trade down

3) McNair. He is going to be hurt anyway.

4) Definitely the O's. Would just show Angelos that when you put someone in charge who knows what they are doing (McPhail) good things will happen.

Re: Lets play the what if game By Tim on 4/9/2008 7:18 PM

id still say trade sherril, brob and mora, and if we could payton, millar and huff and lets keep getting younger and rebuild with guys who can have an impact for the next 5 plus years

Re: Lets play the what if game By Wolff on 4/9/2008 8:13 PM

Trade everyone but Nick.
Trade down if you are the Ravens
Get rid of Boller.
It is always fun when the Ravens are winning, but if the O's were to win it all it would be great because the Yanks and the Sox didn't do it. I can't stand all the talk about the Yanks and Red Sox nationally, but it does make Sportscenter good.
Go TIGER!!!!

Re: Lets play the what if game By Ray from Owings Mills on 4/10/2008 10:33 PM

1. I'd definitely do B and C. I might wait on A since we don't know what Ray will look like nexy year.
2. E. I'd rather have Cromartie over McKelvin. Not sold on Ryan. Not sure how much we need Ellis, Clady maybe but I'd rather have the corner as I think Gaither can develop and be as good. He was a projected future number 1 pick. So if we can trade down and get DRC and pick up a couple of extra picks, good.
3. B, I'd personally hire a Mayflower to move him to his next team.
4. Ravens. And it pains me to say this. I like Maryland, but they aren't Baltimore's team at heart. At least it doesn't feel that way. (And our home grown talent definitely doesn't feel that way) And while I would love to see the O's prosper (I was only 1 when we last won the WS) And grew up idolizing Cal Ripken, I wouldn't be that big of a story. Camden Yards would still only seat 35,000 at max. Angelos might still act an a-hole. Fans might still get disrespected. We would be robbed of the how a championship team should feel. It would be unfulfilled. Remember when we were in first place a until June few years back. I don't remember that much energy then.
But if the Ravens one, EVERYONE would don Purple and Black. It would be a major story. I would unite gangs, estranged families. Stop crime, heal relationships. it would be electric.
