Williams Risking His Terps Legacy

There is no other way to put it; Gary Williams is risking it all with the signing of junior college guard, Tyree Evans. His reputation, his character and his legacy. Why would Gary Williams, a coach with 600 career victories, an ACC championship, and a national championship, risk it all with a kid that has a questionable character?
The answer is simple; following three NIT appearances in four years, Williams is feeling uneasy about his tenure at Maryland. Also when he takes a look at his roster for next year, he sees a backcourt that has more questions than answers. Will Greivis Vasquez get consistent? Can Eric Hayes get more athletic and find his confidence? Will Adrian Bowie or Cliff Tucker, both great athletes, emerge as solid ACC players? Can Sean Mosley get his academics in order and actually qualify.
With all these questions, you probably can’t blame Williams for taking this gamble. Sports are a today business, and today the Maryland basketball program is underachieving. Yesterday’s savior is today’s goat.
Evans reportedly is the type of player that can help the Terps back to the Big Dance; he is lighting quick and a great shooter (44% from 3-point range). He immediately helps solve the lack of backcourt quickness and should push the other guards to step up their game.
To be fair to the kid, he has apparently stepped up his academics at the junior college level, and his coach has vouched for him. Williams has personally said he will mentor the kid and keep him out of trouble.
My biggest fear is that the large and complex urban institution that is Maryland with lots of temptation and people that will test this kid. It will only take one small mistake or error in judgment, and skeptics will be quick to pounce on both Evans and Williams. A serious incident and Williams will most likely not be able to survive the onslaught. He might not survive a small incident.
So is it worth the risk? I will put it this way: without this kid, Maryland might not get back into the NCAA Tournament. If the Terps don’t make it back to the big dance next year, Williams’ chair goes from tepid to scorching hot. But if this move fails and Evans does get in trouble, it will cost him something more than his job it will cost him his legacy.

Vince, there is a much more complicated back story than what most of the mainstream media has presented in the Tyree Evans story.

On Dec 20, 2007, Maryland signed junior college point guard Bobby Maze from Hutchinson Junior College. He was academcially a question mark and Gary Williams most likely gave him a list of academic benchmarks that he would need to reach in order to play at Maryland. He didn't reach all of them or wasn't progressing fast enough academically, so Gary jumped on Tyree and didn't take Bobby.

While Tyree Evans has certainly had a lot of negative issues in his past, he is a much more safe bet academically at this time than Bobby Maze was (Terps also signed his JUCO teammate Ken Bowman, but he was a problem academically as well and he won't be coming to Maryland).

This is certainly a risk, but both Gary and Tyree claim that the guard has changed his bad habits of the past. Moreover, Greivis Vasquez has said that he will also help mentor Evans and keep him out of trouble, the two of them are hitting it off pretty well which is good because they will be the starting backcourt of the next 2 years.

So, I say its worth the risk. The Maryland backcourt is young and loaded next year and can really be the best backcourt in the ACC two years from now (2009-2010 season).

If Tyree works out, if Gary can pull in a stud big man in his 2009 class (Dante Taylor of NCA would be ideal!) and if Vasquez stays for his senior season, the 09-10 Terps have a chance to be a really good team. (VF Edit: Matt you are correct that Bobby Maze set this in motion, as did Sean Mosley's academics. Don't be amazed if Greivis goes from point guard to small forward next year. That would leave Hayes or Bowie running the team and Evans at shooting guard.)

Re: Williams Risking His Terps Legacy By Matt Berger on 5/11/2008 11:45 AM

Vince, I heard from a source who covers Maryland sports for a living that part of the agreement GV had with Gary when deciding whether to say or go is playing the point guard position. Apparently, and this is all just coming from this person who does this for a living, GV basically told Gary to gurantee him the PG spot as one of the conditions for his staying at Maryland. It sounds really dumb and selfish, but I'm just reporting what I heard. With that in mind, I would expect the 09-10 lineup (if GV stays as senior) to still have GV at the 1-guard. If he jets for the NBA or he agrees to move off the ball, then Bowie or Hayes would have to step in there. In 2010, Maryland has a multitude of PG options in recruiting to replace the departing Vasquez and Hayes, many of whom play in Baltimore now. For Mosley's academic standing, this same source says he hasn't 100% qualified yet, but things appear to be fine now. I agree, there were definetly more worries when Gary agreed to take Tyree Evans. Go Terps! (VF Edit: Matt, I hope this isn't true. While I like Greivis as a player and yes he currently is the best functioning point guard on the team, he is not a point guard. He belongs at either the two or three position in college and two at the NBA level. They need to work with Bowie in the summer to make him a point. Maybe a 12-14 minutes this year at the one. Thanks for your comment.)

(VF Edit: Duke Fan, you have a very short memory or did you forget Sheldon Williams was embroiled in a shady incident that involved allegations of sexual assault while he was still in high school.)

You do realize what Sheldon Williams did is much worse than what is being reported happened to Tyree? Also, did you hear Nik Caner-Medley's girlfiend's name is Myra and she calls him Piggy? You should put that on your cheer sheet.
