First off, happy Memorial Day to one and all and I hope you had a safe, healthy and fun weekend.
The Orioles needed a stopper on the mound and today Garrett Olson rose to the challenge against the Yankees at OPACY. Olson threw seven strong innings at a New York team that had won five in a row coming into this afternoon’s series opener.
On the flip side, Baltimore had lost five in a row and dropped into last place in the AL East. But it’s back to .500 for the Orioles after today’s 6-1 drubbing of the Bronx Bombers. The loss for New York puts them back in cellar of the division and there is nothing about that scenario that upsets me.
So, after 50 games the Orioles are playing .500 baseball. I don’t know about you, but I still find that acceptable.
Steve Trachsel’s pitching has been unacceptable this season. I know he may have been a little rusty, but Trachsel has had a hard time getting people out all season. It might be time for Matt Albers to start making more than just a spot start here and there…if you know what I’m saying.
Did you now that Baltimore OF Nick Markakis is 9-for-11 lifetime against Yankee pitcher Darrell Rasner?
I wonder if Mark Mussina noticed who won game three of the Eastern Conference Finals between the Boston Celtics and Detroit Pistons? In case he didn’t, it was the Celtics. You know the Celtics? The team I picked to win game three ( Hey, I rarely get one right. Let me gloat a little).
On this date in 1973, Al Bumbry and Tommy Davis hit home runs as the Orioles beat the Minnesota Twins 7-2 in a rain-shortened seven-inning game at Metropolitan Stadium in Minnesota. Don Baylor drove in two runs and pitcher Mike Cuellar went the distance as Baltimore improved to 18-19 on the season.
Look for Bumbry and Cuellar to be part of the KOBS which will happening at WNST. Stay tuned. It is going to be a blast.
