Pimlico: Selections for Thursday (Day 25) & "Sports King" Write-In
Location: BlogsBlogsGary Quill's Blog
Posted by: Gary Quill 5/29/2008 8:08 AM
If the news out of Belmont were performed as part of a late 70’s Saturday Night Live Weekend Update segment, Emily Latella (the late Gilda Radner) would have said, “…Never mind!” All is well in the Big Brown camp as the Derby and Preakness champ galloped a 1 ½ miles, showing no ill effects from the quarter crack discovered on Saturday. Stay tuned. There’s 9 more days until the Belmont and I assume a lot more drama.

As far as the "King of all Baltimore Sports". My Write-In would have to be Jim Gentile. Of course, he'll never make the list because no one under the age of 55 has a clue who he is!

Recapping Day 24 (May 26th)…

Best Bet, Hazaam’s Advantage (# 7; 3rd race on the turf; 3-1) got a lukewarm reception at the betting windows, going off as the 7-2 3rd choice. But when the gates opened, he ran better than the favorite and second choice, leading from gate to two jumps before the wire. He got beat by a head by Deadline (6-1) who snuck through along the rail. Hazaam’s Advantage returned $4.80 for the Place and $3.00 in the Show spot.

Longshot, Doolittle (# 8; 7th race on the turf; 30-1) ran like a 30-1. Well, he actually went off at 25-1. The 5 furlongs was just too short for his liking. By the time he got going in the stretch, he was behind a wall of horses, finishing 7th.

Here’s who I like today, May 29th, Day 25 of the Pimlico Spring Meet…

Best Bet:         Cedar Slew  (# 6; 2nd race; 2-1)

This field of 7 going 6 furlongs lacks early speed. I see only two who want any part of the pace… # 4 Closed Court and my pick. Closed Court will only be good for about 4 furlongs as long as Cedar Slew presses him, which he should. Rider Craig Gibbs is becoming one of the better jocks on the Maryland circuit.

Longshot:        Appeal To The City (# 6; 7th race on the turf; 6-1)

On Black-Eyed Susan Day, she was scratched from a $50k stakes race because it was taken off the turf. Three days later she ran at this level at Delaware Park even though that race was also taken off the turf, finishing 4th out of 7. There is no doubt she’ll get to run on the grass today where she has won twice and placed 3 times in 7 lifetime turf starts.

I want to hear who you like today! Good Luck with your selections!

I like long shot Foxs Son of Grace (#3; 3rd race on the turf; 15-1. He's a son of Financial Matter who was a pretty good turfer in his own right. Also who would you have for Pimlico jockeys if they were included in the contest. Chris McCarron, Ronnie Franklin, Kent Desormeux, Edgar Prado, Julie Krone, et al?<br>(GQ replied: Not sure how far you go back, but I'd make William J. Passmore my # 1 jockey. Why? He stayed in Maryland his entire career. After him, I'd go with Chris McCarron, Kent, Mario Pino, Julie then Edgar. If it weren't for Spectacular Bid, Franklin would have been a journeyman his entire career and MAYBE not have gone down the wrong road?!)

Write In's... I am 45 and I have known who Jim Gentile is since I was 7 as well as just about any other great baseball player. My father taught my brother and I about all the great from the 1910's 20’s 30's 40's. That being said my write in's are : Jim Gentile; Jimmy Orr (because I loved the way he used Orrsville in the dugout side of the end zone at Memorial Stadium); Paul Blair (one of the best outfielders to ever put on an Orioles Uniform); Native Dancer (won 21-22 race and I know he was born in Lexington, KY but he was raised in Baltimore and owned by Baltimore's Alfred Gwynn Vanderbilt). I'll agree this one is a little off the wall but in his day he was a national hero that was from Baltimore. (GQ replied: That's awesome! Thank God for our Dad's who shared with us the greats from the past. I'm only 5 years older (50). I cannot argue with anyone you mentioned. It's ashamed that we can only pick from a list of 30 to write-in.)

Re: Pimlico: Selections fo Thursday (Day 25) & "Sports King" Write-In    By Dave ( Hollandtown) on 5/29/2008 4:40 PM

I don't think these two qualify but I'll threw them out there anyway ... Mario Pino and Cigar. (GQ replied: You are correct! No man, woman or horse qualify in the "Baltimore Sports King" contest becasue Rule #1 is "member of a Baltimore Professional Sports Team". But if anyone from Maryland horse racing was eligible, I put Cigar #1 then Pino behind "Willy" Passmore.)

Re: Pimlico: Selections for Thursday (Day 25) & "Sports King" Write-In    By Eric on 5/29/2008 4:40 PM

GQ - You mentioned Bill Passmore. If you put him on the list, you have to consider George Cusimano, Danny Wright, and Chuck Baltazar. As far as the baseball guys on the list Brady Anderson couldn't carry Paul Blair's jock strap. There is no comparing the 2. (GQ replied: Georgie Cusimano... he could ride a horse but couldn't control a sports car at Delaware Park! I'd put Vincent Braccaile, Jr. in there before Danny & Chuck. But let's forget about Luigi Gino, Ben Felicano, Jr. and (the late) Eric Walsh. I agree 100% with your assessment of Brady Anderson.)
