The Final Hours of Jon Ogden as a Raven ?
Location: BlogsBlogsCasey Willett's Blog
Posted by: Casey Willett 6/11/2008 6:13 AM

Today could be the day that we get a definitive answer on the future of Jonathan Ogden.

Today is the weekly day for the media to attend the next to last team practice, albeit voluntary, of the Ravens offseason until training camp. Ogden is supposed to be in town for a golf tournament that he is having this week.

It would make sense for the Ravens to have a quick press conference for Ogden to say that he is finished. The media will be at 1 Winning Drive today for practice and interviews with the players afterward, so it would make it easy to do something quick today. Ogden has said all along that he does not want some big parade or great farewell thing to happen when he does make his decision.

Here is how I have come to the conclusion that this could be the end:

-          Ogden has seen Mike Flynn and Edwin Mulitalo, who are two of his very close friends released by the Ravens the last two years. Ed, Mike and Jonathan were extremely close and it was thought that Flynn could have talked Ogden into coming back. But Flynn is gone as well.

-          The retirement of Steve McNair. Steve was a guy that also could have talked Ogden into coming back this year. I would not be surprised if Ogden and McNair have had some phone conversations this offseason as far as their future here in Baltimore. McNair, I am sure, would have liked to have a guy like Ogden on the offensive line with him if he was going to play in 2008.

-          His toe will never be ready for the grind of an NFL season. If Ogden did decide to come back this year, I think it would be more of what we saw last year. He would be a question mark every single week, and constantly be with the training staff, something that he was clearly frustrated with last season.

-          There has been an obvious change in the way of doing things after the firing of Brian Billick, and most of his staff. Ogden would be coming back to a situation were he is having to deal with a new head coach, offensive line coach, offensive coordinator, and as we have clearly seen, a different way of doing things than what Ogden has been used to for 10 years. That is hard to get anyone to do, let alone convince someone that wonders if he wants to play anymore.
-          There is no doubt that one of the biggest motivating factors for Ogden coming back the last couple of years is to get another Super Bowl ring. Players say all the time that the worst part of winning a Super Bowl is that you always want another because you realize how special of a moment that it is. Money is not what Ogden has played for; he has taken care of himself very well financially. Looking at this team and the season they are coming off of, there are not a lot of people predicting the Ravens to make the playoffs, so that is something I am sure Ogden is thinking about.

-          There is also a segment on the Ravens website of pictures of Ogden titled Legendary 75 that  was posted yesterday. I felt that on the final game of last season when Ogden had his wife and son on the sideline for the final couple of minutes that he was done playing.

So in the next 24 hours, I expect we will get closure on the career of Ogden. I consider myself fortunate to have covered him for the last 5 seasons, and realize that I watched one of the truly best ever at his position, and a sure fire Hall of Famer. That is going to be one heck of a class in Canton in 2013 when Ogden, Brett Favre, Michael Strahan, Warren Sapp, and possibly Steve McNair, could be inducted.

Disagree on most of this. Listening to Ogden the last couple of years, I believe if he was 100% healthy he'd still want to play. The rest of these things are just additional but VERY small reasons to hang it up. (EDIT: I agree that the health issue is a factor, and although they are small issues, I am sure they are things he has thought about)

ummm...he had his mind made up last year...you do not bring your family on the field and act like he did after the last game if you have even a thought of coming back.

So what...he should have hung up the spikes last year and saved the team a boat-load of cash. I just hope he doesn't stop the insurance commercials. That is "classic" entertainment!

When the Deadskins have a great Super Bowl winning player retire again Johnny then you can run your mouth. Since they haven't won one since Casey was in diapers your going to have a long wait.

Much respect due to Ogden's career, however as Strahan and McNair did, Ogden needs to make a decision and effing retire already. I've never seen a NON-HIGHLIGHT player act so un-decisive and non-committal about a decision. Is it a difficult decison? I would imagine that it is, but we've all made difficult decisions before. Ogden injured his toe approximately around December '06....and 18 months later he's still sitting on the fence. If Ogden lacks the motivation, the drive, or the HEALTH to do the one thing that he once did so much better than everyone else. Then the decision should not be as difficult as he is making it.

Umm...Eric, do the names Riggins, Monk, Sanders, Theismann, Mann, Green, Jacoby, Homberg, Grimm, Bostic, Edwards, Rypien Lachey, Jurgensen, Kilmer, Hanburger, Bass, Baugh, Brown, Butz, Byner, Fischer, Houston, Huff, May, McKenzie, Mitchell, Moseley, Murphy Taylor, Mann, Warren, Washington and Williams come to mind? I am not saying Mr. Ogden wasn't a great player, but it is time for him to go. Let's look at some of the other Ravens "greats". Ray Ray...convicted felon and suspected murderer, but he really llikes Jesus, so he must be a great guy. Jamal Lewis...convicted drug trafficer, great role model for the kids. Trent Dilfer...wait a minute, he was a good guy and won a Super Bowl(*), but the Ravens told him to go pack sand! I will stop right there. As I have said in the past, the Ravens Super Bowl win should have a (*) next to it as it should be shared with the city of Cleveland. Umm...Eric, the last time a "true" Baltimore team won a Super Bowl was on January 17, 1971! Now that has been a long time. I have to go, but I will leave you with these words from Mr. Ogden, "Go Gebco, Go Gebco"

"So what?" - toolbox John. So what is that it is the end of a great career and an era in the history of the Ravens. A team that 99% of the people on this site love and follow. The fact that you can rip off 20 names from the book of "ghosts of foreskins past" doesn't mean anything to us. Keep hating on the Ravens great players all you want, its painfully obvious how jealous you are that you haven't had any player in maroon come close to greatness since Darrell Green's skills started declining a decade ago. And you're really going to take pot shots at J.O. for doing Gebco commercials? Yeah, Skins players don't do those (At eastern motors....Yo jobs yo credit! - sing it Clinton!). Come off it. Oh, and I'm sure January 17, 1971 stands out so clearly in your mind as it was also the last time your wife got any "true" satisfaction.

Re: The Final Hours of Jon Ogden as a Raven ?    By Ed from Park Heights on 6/11/2008 12:13 PM

Johnny Rocket; find a radiostation that gives a sh*t about the Deadskins, do us a favor and leave. The only Browns on the Ravens Superbowl were Matt Stover and Rob Burnett. Meanwhile your team has a lousy facility, an owner that rapes his fans for every penny he can get, no access to the stadium without an overexpensive busride, the concrete is falling off of the white elephant. Daniel Snyder is pissing in your ear and you are so incredibly stupid, you think it's raining. Do us real Baltimore fans a favor and don't leave mad, just leave.

Re: The Final Hours of Jon Ogden as a Raven ?    By Johnny Rocket on 6/11/2008 1:07 PM

"Pocket" and "Fast Eddie from Park Heights", all I mentioned in my initial comment was that it is time for Mr. Ogden to retire and then some Baltimoron "Eric" takes a shot at the 'Skins. I had to respond. Just like I am to you two "outstanding" citizens. First "Pockets", I am not jealous at all of the Ravens. The Redskins history speaks for itself, End of argument!I think Mr. Ogden was a great player. The other two I mentioned, Ray Ray and Jamal made some mistakes. Ray Ray is going to sh*t on Baltimore just as soon as this season is over and he has to bolt to another team to sign for bigger money so he can support his 5 illegitimate children! Believe me, Ray Ray is going to leave a heaping pile of manure on the Ravens and their fans. Insert both of your names here! Jamal saw the light a couple of years ago and went to greener pastures. Now to you, "Fast Eddie", I guess you call 93,000+ loyal fans who pack a stadium week after week a lousy facility. Did you know the same design team constructed FedEx Field and M & T Bank Stadium? Take out 20 rows on the top deck and the corners of the upper deck at FedEx and you basically have the same facility. But, the Redskins can support an additional 20,000 fans, the Ravens simply can not! You don't need a bus ride to FedEx if you have season tickets, clearly you do not, so get on the bus if you really want to go to the game! I think that is the Redskins management position...they don't want "outsiders" in the stadium. Unlike the "loyal" Ravens fans who year after year sell their PSL paid for season tickets to Steeler fans! Christ, those Pittsburgh people tailgate and take over your city. They are all over the news every year, laughing and having a good old time. Why do Ravens fans sell their tickets? I guess you need Christmas money or money for a "new" purple jersey! And why do you people, have Ravens nests or roosts? I guess so a bunch of you can get together during Ravens away games and the home game against Pittsburgh and act like drunken as*holes on Sunday afternoons! I can hear you all now....Whew, Whew, GO Ravens! Enjoy your upcoming 5-11 season!

I can't believe a dignified blog became a victim to another lame Mid-Atlantic spit fest about nothing. The Redskins have great players and HOFers the Ravens will eventually and hopefully have two future HOFers. Why do you all have to indulge into these pointLESS verbal chicken fight and please don't tell me because you're a fan based off your previous blogs, that might be comparable to being a dysfunctional inbred.
