Everyone's worried about their credit rating...

One year ago today, Andy MacPhail took over as the Orioles Chief Operating Officer.

Since he arrived, the club has experienced a rebirth on literally just about every front. The team is much better on the field, the attendance is improving and the franchise is experiencing a new level of satisfaction from fans and consumers.

Prior to MacPhail's arrival, the Orioles were a wreck. Make that a WRECK...in all caps.

The team couldn't win on the field, fans had stopped coming and, at just about every turn, things were getting worse, not better.

Enter Andy MacPhail.

Call it coincidence or a mixture of experience and hard work, but whatever the case, the franchise is back on four wheels and the ride isn't anywhere near as bumpy now as it was last year.

Everyone's happy, right?

Not quite.

My feathered friends who work at The Warehouse tell me there's tension in the air at OPACY because some veteran front office members feel MacPhail is getting too much of the credit. According to some, MacPhail's only charge has been to fix the on-field product. The off-field improvements - and there have been many - are not connected to MacPhail, the disgruntled are whispering. Inviting the Ravens to be part of pre-game first pitch ceremonies...better promotional nights...t-shirt and bobble-head giveaways...and putting BALTIMORE back on the road jerseys...all of those things are being thrown under the Andy MacPhail umbrella and they shouldn't be. That's where the friction comes in. People want credit now that things are turning around. Oddly, they didn't want the blame when things were going haywire -- but now that good things are happening, suddenly there's a line forming in the "Credit Department".

I don't really know who is responsible for all of the positive turnarounds, but I know this: Before Andy MacPhail got here, the Orioles treated the Ravens like they had purple poison-ivy. Before Andy MacPhail arrived, crowds were suffering and stories about mean-spirited ushers and less than satisfactory nights at the ballpark were legendary. Putting BALTIMORE back on the road jerseys was an undiscussable subject at OPACY - in fact, it was this time last year when an O's staffer was quoted as saying, "we're not going to allow a vocal minority to dictate club policies..." MacPhail arrived and within a year, BALTIMORE goes back on the road jerseys. I don't remember Orioles players appearing at local malls on the day of a home game to sign autographs and meet the fans. Since Andy MacPhail arrived, they've been out in droves on Saturday mornings saying hi to the "great unwashed".

I don't know how much involvement MacPhail had in any of that stuff, but I can add one and one -- it's two.

So, as MacPhail's one-year anniversary comes around, media members and fans (via blogs/message boards, etc.) are giving MacPhail his fair due. And why shouldn't they, right? Wrong.

Well, it's wrong to certain members of the O's front office who are evidently bristling at all the accolades MacPhail is receiving. Amazing, huh? After a decade of downright despair, someone comes along and improves the team ON the field and OFF the field and suddenly everyone is worried about how much credit Andy MacPhail is receiving.

Happy Anniversary, Andy. I hope you enjoy your gift. Open it up...

It's a box of jealousy. In the offices at OPACY, it's the gift that never stops giving.

You're the only guy in town with this story, Drew. Nice work!

Does any of this surprise you? Leave it to the Orioles to foul up a guy's one-year anniversary. Like you said, Drew, who knows who is really responsible but when you add up one and one it comes out to Andy MacPhail.

Great blog, Drew...dead on. Do you think we'll ever hear an official announcement about "Baltimore" on the road jerseys or did Peter Angelos throw that into the black hole, hoping that no one would notice that he finally gave into the fans and WNST?

You guys sound like a bunch of old ladies gossiping over the fence in the back yard.

Leave it to the Orioles? If Drew is the only one reporting this isn't it WNST that is ruining the one year anniversary? Would you expect the Orioles to control everyones mind? How else could you say that the Orioles are fouling up McPhail's anniversary?

If Pete has any sense (assumption), he should weed out anyone over there who is not "on-board" with what MacPhail is doing. Even if Pete does not care about the team itself, Baltimore, or it's fans... he at least cares about $$$. And with MacPhail continuing to steer the ship in the right direction, then Pete is likely "on-board" because Andy's actions and policies will continue to help and grow Pete's investment. A good cleansing over there would not be a bad thing. Afterall, as far as the on-field product goes, we always said the Orioles needed to get rid of the same old recycled coaches that have been here for the past 10 years of losing i.e. Dempsey, Trebelhorn, Perlozzo etc. They have for the most part and see the result. The same should be done for the behind the scenes people and get rid of these lunatics who have been around mistreating the fans and coming up with idiotic media policies during the coincidentally same 10 years of losing.

Who cares who gets the credit. Those O's staffers who are upset that MacPhail is getting credit for the turn around should ask themselves what they were doing the last 10 years, beside being Angelo's yes men....the most important part is that the O's are winning ON and OFF the field

Re: Everyone's worried about their credit rating... By Joe on 6/20/2008 4:17 PM

The reason Andy MacPhail was supposed to help was that Angelos had a guy that he trusted and could let him do his thing. Hopefully Angelos can figure out that any credit MacPhail gets also goes to Angelos- after all, he was the one that brought MacPhail here.

Re: Everyone's worried about their credit rating... By Eric on 6/20/2008 4:16 PM

The funny thing is, the "worker bees" who want the credit are all just doing their jobs as a result of a new direction and new philosophies that came in the door with MacPhail. Without his presence, the franchise is still free-falling into oblivion (on AND off the field) and they're probably 7 or 8 games under .500 at minimum right now.

Re: Everyone's worried about their credit rating... By Dave Bimestefer on 6/21/2008 11:49 AM

All of those unhappy people in the front office should be fired immediately and see if they could get a job with another club
based on their "stellar" work prior to Macphail.

Re: Everyone's worried about their credit rating... By The "Armchair" QB on 6/22/2008 8:32 AM

"Blame game" or "credit rating" - they're both unhealthy! The difference, of course, is nobody wants to take responsibility for losing and everybody wants to take credit for winning!

you are the only wnst blogger worth reading. and.................when you write stuff like this you make me proud. I actually agree with many of your latest writings. i think all of your talk show hosts( i know you are not the boss) should have in their contract they must write something at maybe twice a week. and...........we don't need these other guys that are prime bloggers writing all these either same things on the same subjects or meaniless bloggs most who i have never heard of except our ex pitchers' brother.
on another note......my new format as you see is small letters. it's either all caps or all small what do you think is best drew?
i do have a question that invovles i think the oriole owner and if anyone can get the anwser you can.
my clearview cable has masn one and two ( no comcast sports) channel but my direct tv does not have masn two and i only have bought basic cable to watch oriole games or i would miss 40% or more because for some stupid reason the owner of masn who owns the orioles makes us watch washington games in baltimore and if you could not get cable you would miss alot of games. is angelos asking direct tv for to much money and is that why direct tv does not carry masn two ? yes drew i have called and written direct tv but no one that calls or writes back knows the answer. direct tv has many many sports station all the fox and college stuff espnu but no masn two why ?
keep up you good quality blogs and stay away from sports junk stuff. you are writing quality items that are not only interesting but are well worth reading by all sports fans and ignore the stupid comments of some wacky responses from writers.
