Brett Favre to the Ravens?
Location: BlogsBlogsNestor Aparicio's Blog
Posted by: Nestor Aparicio 7/12/2008 9:33 AM

Even though the story broke at the worst possible time for the press -- a late Friday afternoon -- the "Brett Favre back to the NFL and NOT with the Packers" story is almost too delicious for any Ravens fan to ignore.

Message boards are awash with rumors of Brett Favre to the Ravens already.

But so are the fans’ hopes in several other places, including former division rivals -- Chicago and Minnesota. (And wouldn’t that be a slap in the face, right? Think about Ray Lewis going to play in Pittsburgh or Cleveland?)

My sources in Owings Mills tell me that tales of Brett Favre to the Ravens are “crap.” The Ravens' mantra since Brian Billick's firing has been "we are building for the long term not the short term."

But, one of ESPN’s main NFL bloggers has already written a huge piece about why Ozzie Newsome should’ve called Bus Cook during happy hour on Friday.

I get it. So do you.

Big star, Hall of Famer, end of the line, comes to blue collar Baltimore and leads the purple to the Super Bowl in Tampa salvaging the twilight of Ray Lewis' career among others like Derrick Mason, Trevor Pryce, Chris McAlister, etc...

Favre completes what Steve McNair almost did.

Rookie Joe Flacco learns from him. Kyle Boller and/or Troy Smith watch and carry the clipboard. Cam Cameron lets Favre do his thing and they work magic together.

The most obvious question any fan would ask is this: “How could Brett Favre NOT be better than ANY of the aforementioned QB’s for the Ravens this year?”

And I gotta say that I don’t disagree with THAT sentiment. But I also wonder why Brett Favre would want to have Jared Gaither as his left tackle. And whether the $X million they'll have to pay him is "smart money," given their true prospects of winning 12 games this year with Favre.

But, if the long-range plan here is to groom a QB and the cap room is teeny and the front office really DOESN’T believe that the team is a Super Bowl contender this season then why bust up everything and the “major gameplan” to bring Favre in for 16 weeks?

Didn’t they attempt to do that with Deion Sanders? And by keeping the 2001 team together with Elvis Grbac?

But bringing in Shannon Sharpe and Steve McNair proved to be “genius moves” in retrospect.

And what would Ray Lewis make of the team’s decision to bring in Favre? Or not bring in Favre? We all know that No. 52 gets heard in the organization: see Sanders, Billick, etc.

This is why GM Ozzie Newsome gets the big bucks. He’s the new traffic cop for all of this drama now that Billick isn’t the “front” for the Bellagio.

And busting up the “process” doesn’t seem to be an impulsive “Ozzie-like” move. And as much as Newsome might be hearing footsteps after Brian Billick got guillotined, I honestly don’t think he’ll be “trying to save his job” with the 2008 win-loss record. It’s just not Ozzie’s style. Newsome hasn’t acted desperately in any circumstance, and in concert with Billick, that just hasn’t been the organization’s style.

The jury is still out on John Harbaugh and what role he’ll have in these “moments of decision” that will determine the club’s ultimate destiny.

But with the Ravens there’s always the emerging wild card: owner Steve Bisciotti.

Don’t be surprised if Bisciotti doesn’t get in his two cents about the 2008 season and whether he’d like to see Favre in a purple jersey, especially if there’s no player cost and only a cap cost.

This is a BIG part of the equation.

Don’t kid yourself: the days of Bisciotti just being a “fan” are over. He’ll be heard on this one, for sure.

And then there’s the ultimate clarity about whether there’s any faith at all in Kyle Boller or Troy Smith to lead the team and win games this year. And whether emerging Joe Flacco (who everyone in Owings Mills tells me is the best-looking quarterback they’ve had in purple in a long time) will pass them by during the third week of August.

It’s a weekend of “hmmmmmm” in Owings Mills for sure.

My guess is that they’ll “pass” on Favre.

But that’s only what I think Ozzie Newsome will do if he’s running the show.

I think Bisciotti might be a tad bit more interested.

And I know the fan base is gonna be quite stirred up on this one, especially knowing there’s going to be a telling result one way or the other.

The scenarios: Favre either comes here or goes somewhere else. And he’s either gonna play well or not. And the Ravens are gonna make the playoffs or not.

And after that, you can decipher any scenario you desire.

Favre leads Bears to Super Bowl. Or the Ravens to 8-8. Or the Ravens to the Super Bowl. Or the Vikings to 5-11.

Or Joe Flacco goes Roethlisberger or Brady and the Ravens go a surprising 10-6? Or they all stink and Harbaugh's rookie campaign is 4-12? Or Boller and/or Smith lead the team to 7-9?

Who the heck knows?

But that’s what makes this fun?

And we’ll be talking about this decision for a few years to come. It’s another “Y” in the road for the Ravens.

Which path to take?

And don’t think for a nanosecond that Bisciotti isn’t thinking the same thing.

This one oughta be GREAT for comments below...it's a click away!

As Billick would say: "Have at it..."

I think it's a no-brainer, we should make a bid for Favre...let him mentor Flacco and release Boller( sorry Troy!!!!)...Why you ask? Well, Ray is near the end (maybe 2 years left) and he and a few others will not be here when Flacco is ready to take over...Let Flacco sit on the bench and feed off of the energy Favre will bring to the BIRD NEST and give flacco a true leader to follow and learn from....I Bleed Purple!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd have no qualms if the Ravens brought in Favre. The window is almost closed for some of the purple veterans to win a title. Now the Ravens aren't a QB away from winning the super bowl, but nine wins could win the AFC North this year; a mark that is certainly attainable if Favre is our quarterback. To borrow a Madden cliche, anything can happen in the playoffs.

Re: Brett Favre to the Ravens? By Frank Costanza's Lawyer on 7/12/2008 1:50 PM

I don’t think Favre would go to Chicago because they have zero offensive weapons. Minnesota is a little more interesting with Adrian Peterson and a GREAT offensive line; but I don’t think they have the weapons at wide receiver to excite Favre. Bobby Wade was the leading receiver last year with 647 yards and 3 touchdowns; not exactly Donald Driver or Greg Jennings. The Cardinals would be an interesting place for Favre to end up, Boldin is a solid possession receiver and Fitzgerald is an absolute beast. They have a burgeoning defense; but they already have an aging former MVP in Kurt Warner and a young prospect in Matt Leinart at quarterback. Another interesting prospect would be Buffalo where he could throw bombs to Lee Evans every Sunday all Sunday; and hand the ball off to Marshawn Lynch who will be a top 5 back by the end of the year. The problem in Buffalo is the defense where they will struggle to stop the run and the pass and the team in New England will give them two losses next year with or without Favre. So that leaves the Ravens with a solid receiving core of Mason, Clayton, and Heap; a solid running back in McGahee and a defense that is aging but looking to regain their mantel as a top tier unit. I think Favre for a year would be an interesting prospect in purple and black and could lead this team to a much better record than we imagined a month ago; but the real job he could do is to mentor Joe Flacco who has a huge arm and Favre-like improvisation skills. Let’s make this move it will be a good move in both the short and the long term.

hey nestor: imo to bring favre here is a no brainer, NFW. need i remind anyone of favre's woeful performance here in baltimore 2 seasons ago? it's time for the ravens to suck it up & spend 1 season rebuilding. it's worked this year for the other baltimore birds, even as inept as the angelos' management has been the past decade. let favre go anywhere he wants, but NOT here.
Re: Brett Favre to the Ravens? By eric on 7/12/2008 3:16 PM

As ESPN correctly pointed out last night, Favre essentially has a no trade clause. How you ask? Because any team that trades for him needs him to renegotiate his contract so he can tell any team he wants "Hey I'm not renegotiating". And the Pack won't release him. So there are only 2 scenarios left if Favre comes back.
1. They make him A Rodgers' backup
2. They trade him to an AFC team of his choice. I'm betting on #2 and I think the Ravens if they want him will get him. I have serious doubts as well about whether we are interested. Either way, I don't think the chances are as slim as the local fishhacks do(Schmuck and Hensley both say no chance it happens)

Re: Brett Favre to the Ravens? By JT - White Marsh on 7/12/2008 3:16 PM

The Packers are not going to release him. They are setting up a trade scenario and I don't think they will trade him to an NFC team. So, the Ravens could potentially be in the running to get him, but do they really want to give something up to get him? And what would it take? If the Ravens are serious about rebuilding then they shouldn't give up anything to get Farve. That said, I don't think he comes here.

Re: Brett Favre to the Ravens? By PSURaven on 7/12/2008 4:51 PM

For you people that want Favre so bad...forget about the trade value for Favre, its peanuts in comparison to who the Ravens would have to cut or mortgage the future for, to get Favre. Which impact Ravens players are you willing to cut to shave $8 or 9 million off the cap to get Favre?

Re: Brett Favre to the Ravens? By eric on 7/12/2008 4:51 PM

Update: John Clayton handicaps the field this way
1. TB
2. Bal
3. Mia
Says that Car and Was rumors are nonsense. And Min and Chi want him but can't get him.

Re: Brett Favre to the Ravens? By Marlon on 7/13/2008 5:21 AM

As much as I like Brett Favre, I just don't think it's a good idea to bring him here. It's wouldn't be fair for John Harbaugh to have to deal with the Favre media circus his first year as head coach. Plus we have two very promising young QBs in Troy Smith and Joe Flacco who deserve to be given more of chance to prove themselves. Who knows one of them could shock the world and take the Ravens very far in 2008, let's at least give both Flacco or Smith a chance to try.

Re: Brett Favre to the Ravens? By Gene from Baltimore on 7/13/2008 5:22 AM

Is it just me or does every big name free agent or cast off gets link to to the Ravens. First off, why would he want to come here? Because the Ravens are a QB away from the SuperBowl? Please. Second, we already tried that "Get Rich Quick" scam with Steve McNair, we all saw how that turned out. Third, I am sure the man wants to win now and right now. He didn't want to tutor Aaron Rodgers so why the hell would he want to come and tutor Joe Flacco and the rest. All in all I can't think of a good reason why he should. I wouldn't. Any one who thinks that last season's callapse was just a fluke is fooling themselves. The Ravens are no closer to the Playoffs than I am. Sorry, no one wants to admit that but that's the reality of the situation. They aren't even the best team in their own Division let alone the Conference! 9 wins and a Playoff berth? OK. Last time I checked you have to score
