After spending the majority of time in the past month away from home, here are some random sports thoughts:

  • While I am thrilled that the Orioles are continuing to play with lots of heart, I am distressed that seemingly every time there was an opportunity to watch an Oriole game or see their highlights, it would include base running blunders that you would not expect to see from major leaguers.
  • Boog Powell may not be the KOBS, but his son’s pit beef stand bearing his Dad’s name in OCMD reigns as the King Of Pit Beef (KOPB).
  • The one day I am able to watch a soccer match rather than referee (Turkey vs. Germany in the Euro Cup), and the television feed is lost multiple times in the second half. I didn’t think that could happen in 2008.
  • More often than not, in playoff and tournament soccer, and other sports as well, the matches leading up to the finals are more exciting and better matches than the final match.
  • Was saddened to find out that legendary indoor soccer goalkeeper Slobo Ilijevski suddenly passed away due to a dissected aorta that happened while playing soccer. While most of his career was with the St. Louis Steamers, he also played for the Blast.
  • It was fun to be at a Minnesota sports bar, yelling for Charlie Brown during the All Star game, then explaining the whole Charlie Brown thing to British soccer referees who barely understand baseball.
  • Had a blast “singing” Sweet Caroline at that same sports bar with those same British referees. I learned that it is regularly sung by Arsenal fans during their home matches.
  • Too many serious runners/joggers/walkers on the OCMD boardwalk, and too few surfers on the special surfing beach at the Inlet.
  • Arcade games such as air hockey and skee-ball have competitive leagues. So, should we consider these guys and gals athletes?
