10. Wes Unseld’s rookie season with the Baltimore Bullets (1968-1969)

Only two players in NBA history have ever won both Rookie of the Year and MVP in the same season. One was Wilt Chamberlain in 1960. The other was Unseld after averaging 13.8 points and an amazing 18.2 rebounds per game. The arrival of Unseld lead to a 21 game turnaround for the Bullets and a return to the postseason after missing the two previous seasons.

Fun list…interesting insight. Greatest debut in Baltimore history has to be Frank Robinson in 1966. Joe Altobelli didn’t do so bad, either. Two other Orioles debut seasons that come to mind are Mighty Mike Young (’84 & ’85?) and Jim Traber in the summer of ’86.

I was at many of those events and I was lucky to be born here in 1958 and grow up with the Orioles and Colts in their prime. I have to totally agree with Frank being number one.
I was a Jr Oriole in 66 attending many games with my late father. Frank turned this town on its ear and provided baseball with a season for the ages. His 6 years here was the Oriole way!
