The latest #WNSTSweet16 is a laughing matter

5. Charley Eckman

A fascinating character in the history of Baltimore sports, Eckman’s resume was impressive as an NBA coach and basketball official before he settled into his iconic role as a local sportscaster with a style unique to anyone else.

Never one to like using scripts, Eckman used his vast experiences, humor, and knowledge to inform and entertain as older fans remember his WCBM show with the legendary Art Donovan as programming gold that eventually landed the pair on television as kindred spirits. His trademark “call a cab” was iconic, even if he was sometimes guilty of forgetting the names of his sponsors.

It just added to his charm.

The late Eckman will always be revered for his relationship with the Baltimore Blast during the height of indoor soccer’s popularity, but he also had the privilege of calling Orioles games with Chuck Thompson and Bill O’Donnell, providing the famous and frantic “Get out of here!” call of Doug DeCinces’ dramatic game-winning home run that birthed “Orioles Magic” during the 1979 season.

    Luke,
GREAT job. I dont think anyone in their right mind would complain about this list. Watching the letterman clips with Art Donovan took me back. Holy Moly he was funny.

On a side note, what do you think the back lash would be today if a player (just because he was also on the list, we’ll say Terell Suggs) went on a late night talk show and talked about a jewish guy beating him out in college and then making the reference to “those guys are supposed to be lawyers and doctors? It makes me wish we could go back to the 80′s and 90′s when people didnt get bent out of shape about everything.

(L.J. – Thanks, Chris. I was thinking the same exact thing when I heard that portion of the clip. It was definitely a different era.)

Nice job! I still get chills listening to the Decinces homerun call…seems like it was yesterday for a lifelong Oriooo’s fan as Eckman would say.
