Let’s Get 2!

May 12, 2010 | John West

This is my “Buy the Bats” rant for the week.

I want 2 please.  I want OF Jayson Werth and 1st Base/DH Victor Martinez.  Please note, this is not a Garrett Atkins, Miguel Tejada offseason plan.  This is a “I want to win” plan.  I have to believe that even Andy McPhailure has to realize that Garrett Atkins and Miguel Tejada are not “I want to win” accusations.

I want to make a financial commitment to the Orioles.  If you take the leap and buy 2 bats, I will come back.  Right now, I go to games for bobble heads and fireworks.  I want more, and you want me to give you more money.  We are so close to a deal.  However, you have to try to win.  Lucky for you, I just told you how.

First up is Jayson Werth.  He will be 32 when he files for free agency.  He will require somewhere near, but probably not as high, as the Matt Holliday contract last year.  We are talking somewhere around 7 years and $120 million dollars.  PAY IT!!!!!!!!!   Hope he takes your “confederate money” (That is a reference to previous Oriole GM Sid Thrift and how hard he found it to attract free agents).  I don’t want a pretend 5 year $72 million dollar offer, to placate the fans into thinking they are trying, but just cannot compete.  This team is not facing an insurmountable difference between us and those teams we need to catch.  We do need to overpay a couple of times, and we need to do it right now.  OK, we have our left fielder.

Next up is Victor Martinez.  This will sound very familiar.   He will be 32 when he files for free agency.  He will require somewhere near, but probably not as high, as the Matt Holliday contract last year.  We are talking somewhere around 7 years and $120 million dollars.  PAY IT!!!!!!!!!  Ok, we have our 1st baseman.

We need both of these bats.  I want the top of our lineup to go Brian Roberts, Nick Markakus, Matt Wieters, Jayson Werth, Victor Martinez.  That is a top 5 that can score runs.  Watching this Orioles team play is like watching a really bad 0-1 soccer game.  I can’t do it anymore.  This top 5 would allow Adam Jones and the other 3 players on the team, SS, 3rd base and DH, to bat at the bottom of the lineup, where they belong.

I will get to the arms later, but I will quickly comment that it starts with keeping and signing an extension to Kevin Millwood and draft this kid from Texas.
