Orioles Agree to Deals With Mike Gonzalez, Garrett Atkins

12:30 Update: The Sun adds late tonight that the Orioles have reached a 1 year deal with former Colorado Rockies 3B Garrett Atkins. Atkins was a very good hitter (full disclosure: he played half of his games at Coors Field in Denver) between 2006-2008, tallying 20+ HR’s, 99+ RBI and at least a .286 average in all three seasons. He had a TERRIBLE ’09, batting .226 with 9 HR’s and 48 RBI. He’ll replace Melvin Mora at 3B until the Birds decide to go with the younger Josh Bell. Atkins’ stats are available here.

According to Yahoo! Sports MLB writer Tim Brown via Twitter, the Birds have agreed to a 2 year deal with left-handed reliever Mike Gonzalez. Brown reports the deal is worth $12 million, and incentives could make the deal worth $16 million. Gonzalez is 31, and he appeared in 80 games last season with the Braves; going 5-4 with 10 saves and a 2.42 ERA. He has a career 2.57 ERA in 280.2 innings pitched. You can check out his stats here.

Gonzalez hasn’t been a regular closer since 2006 in Pittsburgh-when he converted 24 of 24 save opportunities. He would certainly have to be considered part of the closer mix in Baltimore; along with Koji Uehara, Dennis Sarfate, Jim Johnson and insert name here.
