Always looking to boost their starting pitching depth, the Orioles have agreed to a minor league contract with left-handed pitcher Dontrelle Willis.
The 30-year-old was released by the Philadelphia Phillies last week after struggling this spring. Willis was 1-6 with a 5.00 earned run average in 13 starts with the Cincinnati Reds in 2011.
Once considered one of the game’s brightest young stars, Willis has seen his career come unglued in recent seasons due to control issues. He is 72-69 with a 4.17 career ERA in nine seasons in the big leagues and was a 22-game winner in 2005.
Willis is represented by Sosnick Cobbe Sports, and the agency confirmed the signing via Twitter on Tuesday evening.
