The Orioles today solidified their spring training roster with the signing of catcher Chad Moeller to a minor league contract that includes an invite to the team’s new Grapefruit League home, Sarasota.
Moeller hit .258 last year for the Birds but that statistic is very deceiving. He also helped groom newcomer Matt Wieters and filled in nicely when the team jettisoned Gregg Zaun.
Think “Jake Taylor” from Major League and that’s Moeller.
More good stuff —
He hit .300 at home in 2009. Just for comparison sake, there are a lot of .300 hitters who are in the Hall of Fame.
In the games he started in ’09 (28), the team was an acceptable 11-17.
And here’s another quirky stat that shows why Moeller is a good acquisition. He did not hit into a double play in a night game (46 games) in all of 2009. That says something about his eye at the plate, I’d say.
Lastly, at $850,000, he’s a reasonable signing in these tough ec0nomic times.
Drew gives this signing two thumbs up.
