O’s sign a pitcher…the spending has started

November 17, 2008 | Drew Forrester

Well, that didn’t take long.

The free-agent spending spree has started in Baltimore.

Desperate for pitching help, the O’s today started working their way back to respectability with the signing of former San Francisco Giants pitcher Juan Marichal Brad Hennessey, who inked a minor-league contract with an invite to the O’s 2009 spring training.

I know, I know, you’re asking, “Who the hell is Brad Hennessey?”

He’s a guy who has pitched in 144 career games with the Giants, including 17 outings in 2008 where he put together a 1-2 campaign with a nifty 7.83 ERA.  Don’t laugh…his ERA with Triple A Tuscon was exactly three runs per-game less at 4.83 — so he has that going for him, which is nice.

The best news of all about Hennessey?  He’s inexpensive.

In fact, there’s a rumor floating around he’s paying the Orioles $400 a week.

Never let it be said the O’s aren’t out there making things happen on the free agency market.

They got Brad Hennessey today.
