So Long Ramon..Hello Ryan Freel

December 09, 2008 |

Later this evening, it is expected to be made official that Ramon Hernandez has been traded to the Reds for Ryan Freel and two minor league prospects. This is a good move by the Orioles, because they get rid of a guy who just was not a part of the plans here any more and his effort and attitude pretty much echoed that. There were several pitchers who did not like throwing to Hernandez anymore because of the game that he called behind the plate. Ramon had an amazing first year here with the O’s in 2006 when he batted .275 with 23 HR’s and 91 RBI’s. However, Ramon has always been known more of as a defensive catcher than an offensive juggernaut.

I think the Orioles now will go get a guy like Gregg Zaun to fill the gap and be a backup and mentor for Matt Wieters. Zaun is very respected, plays the game the right way and will probably be a good teacher for Wieters.
