Baltimore families used to spend lots of their time during the summer at this place. Many Baltimore families have been spending time there for four generations. Now, many Baltimoreans no longer spend as much of their time and money at this place.
This place is Oriole Park at Camden Yards (and before that Memorial Stadium).
This place is also Ocean City Maryland.
Like any true Baltimore area family, we grew up following Baltimore Orioles baseball, and spending our summer vacations in Ocean City. And we still do both.
Many parallels exist between the Baltimore Orioles and Ocean City MD. After reaching the pinnacle of their respective industries, both started to cater more to families with a higher amount of discretionary income, in part to make more money. Both increased their price of their product to the point of pricing out many Baltimore families whose blue collar dollars supported them through the generations. Both businesses have suffered a decline in attendance during the summer. And both have failed to take ownership to the decline in attendance.
I could go on and on…
Fortunately, both are now doing more things to bring back their core base of consumers.
The Orioles are promoting bargain nights, student nights, the Junior Orioles, and the Orioles REACH program “going beyond the ballpark and into the community”.
Ocean City has been placing more emphasis on the various events held throughout the year (Bike week, Springfest, Sunfest, Winterfest of Lights), while also starting a new advertising campaign (click here
). You might have to be patient with the download time…
We have witnessed both evolve to what they are today. Some people have resolved never to go back to OPACY and/or OCMD. Others will go back to one or both when certain conditions are met. Hopefully, both will win back the residents of Parkville, Dundalk, Glen Burnie, Middle River, Lutherville, Essex, Perry Hall, Severna Park, Catonsville…
Are you still going to OPACY and/or OCMD? If so, why? If not, what will it take to get you back?
