Kubiak is a terrific hire. Now…get him some terrific players.

I spent the better part of two hours yesterday writing my Sweet16 entry and getting it ready for publication this morning at WNST.net.

That’s a nice way of saying, “Drew’s not necessarily in the writing mood right about now.”

But I won’t let you down, because I know faithful readers of WNST.net need their fill of Drew’s Morning Dish.

The obvious topic this morning continues to be the hiring of Gary Kubiak as the Ravens new offensive coordinator.  For the record, I think it’s a terrific hire.  That said, I’m about 90% sure a large portion of the local football fanbase will be disenchanted with Kubiak by this time next year.  That’s how we roll around here, it seems.

A national media member who follows @WNST on Twitter said to me yesterday in the Super Bowl Media Center:  ”When did Ravens fans get so hateful?”

We had a brief discussion about the last twelve months and how things change quickly in sports when you go from the penthouse to the outhouse like the Ravens did in 2013.

“I assumed Baltimore was sort of exempt from that type of foolishness,” he said.

Not quite.

I hope Kubiak does well in Baltimore — for a lot of reasons — but he’s not coordinating anyone to the top of the football world with the players currently on the offensive side of the ball.

The Ravens need improved players and better play, period.

Barney Rubble could coordinate the offense if they get better wide receivers, better offensive lineman and a rise in quality from their running backs and quarterback.

They got the offensive coordinator they wanted.

Now…go get him some players.

Yes, he is! And, coming at the last minute indicates that management interceded because they weren’t particularly happy with either Hostler or Shanahan. But, you’re right….they need more talent on the OL and the TE and WR positions.

    right on, totally agree!

This is definitely a big step in the right direction but as the saying goes, it starts up front. We need some new O Linemen more than anything.

On prior postings I indicated that I was against the hiring of Gary Kubiak. Given the previous teams he coached it appears that we will continue with the zone blocking scheme which were inept and challenged last season. Some will claim that Kubiak may be like Norv Turner and Cam Cameron, insomuch as each may be much better assistant coaches than Head Coaches. While that may be true, Houston’s personnel weren’t all that bad, (Andre Johnson & Arian Foster), but they struggled mightily winning only two games this past season.
The other aspect of these hirings that concerns me is that with Kubiak bringing in at least two other coaches, there is a potential for a fractious or divisive locker room if things don’t go well. Who will Rick Dennison and Brian Pariani be loyal to if the offense performs poorly? My guess is that they’ll be loyal to Kubiak… not to John Harbaugh, Ozzie Newsome or Steve Bisciotti.
I suppose time will tell…Let’s just cross our fingers and hope for the best.

Right man wrong players. Ozzie up next. Sorry Harbs hope your feelings were not hurt too much over this. You can get the defense back to blitzing and attacking again you said at the end of year pressor that you like to blitz but Pees does not.

  6. Jason Manelli Says:

I think Bisciotti mad his career on placing talented people in positions to succeed, and that yesterday he made a move to deepen his bench of top tier management for the ballclub. I also agree that a year from now no matter what happens 90% of the fans will hate Kubiak.

But if they win, he’ll be the toast of the town; till he fails…just like every other coach.

    @lakerboy

Their personnel weren’t all that bad? They had no quarterback all year. At least not one that could throw it to the right team. Schaub threw a pick 6 in 5 straight games I think.

I like the hire if they get the players.
