Live From Owings Mills: Mattison Has “Great Confidence” in Secondary, Wants Improvement in Pass Rush

October 15, 2009 | Glenn Clark

6:30-Sorry for the delay in posting the Injury Report, I was at Maryland Media Day. Here it is.

LB Jarret Johnson-LIMITED-Shoulder
DT Haloti Ngata-LIMITED-Bank
TE Edgar Jones-LIMITED-Hamstring
ST/WR David Tyree-FULL-Hamstring

Vikings:

CB Cedric Griffin-FULL-Hand

1:42-While we were talking to Terrell Suggs today, a verbal confrontation broke out between two media members (one from the world of radio, the other from the world of print). If you listen to T-Sizzle in the Audio Vault, you can hear the confrontation begin. I had to edit out the most entertaining part of the exchange, as Terrell tried to keep the situation light by using colorful language. It was entertaining-given the fact that it was a particularly awkward and stupid exchange.

1:41-I only got to poke my head out at practice for a minute (the Ravens are practicing indoors today-which makes plenty of sense as they are playing indoors on Sunday); but I did not see Jared Gaither, Jarret Johnson, or Haloti Ngata. Johnson and Ngata may have just been late arrivals-but the rest of the Offensive Linemen were working out as a group, which leads me to believe that Gaither will be a DNP again today. Gaither was not available during the open locker room session for the media.

1:12-Hear from the following NOW in the Audio Vault at WNST.net:

-OC Cam Cameron
-STC Jerry Rosburg
-DC Greg Mattison
-LB Jarret Johnson
-LB Terrell Suggs

DT Justin Bannan is scheduled to join Drew Forrester at 7:20 tomorrow morning on The Comcast Morning Show on AM1570 WNST and WNST.net.

1:07-Some highlights from Cam Cameron:

-”We’re going into a tough environment” in Metrodome
-Jared Allen has a “high motor” and is “just a great player.”
-It is “unacceptable” to not get Derrick Mason the football (he had no catches against Cincinnati). He considers that HIS “responsibility” and guaranteed that “it’s not going to happen again.”
-On sharing carries between Willis McGahee, Ray Rice, and Le’Ron McClain: “there’s only one football……Ray Rice is playing at a high level.”
-On 2nd guessing: some people think “anything you didn’t do would have worked”, but “everything you didn’t do is not always the answer.”
-Regarding Demetrius Williams: “There’s not always opportunities to get the 4th guy in the game”
-Kelley Washington is playing “lights out”

Demetrius Williams declined an opportunity to speak with reporters.

1:05-Some highlights from Jerry Rosburg:

-Steve Hauschka not attempting a field goal the last 2 weeks is just “the life of a kicker.”
-Percy Harvin “knows how to exploit holes.”
-David Tyree “brings the same body of knowledge” as injured Brendon Ayanbadejo.
-Lardarius Webb “made most of his opportunities” returning kicks

1:01-Some highlights from Greg Mattison:

-”You have to” put the defensive struggles of the last 2 games behind you.
-Bengals had success running the ball because “some guys tried to make plays out of their gaps.”
-Tavares Gooden, Jameel McClain and Dannell Ellerbe are “doing a great job” of filling Bart Scott’s old role
-Jarret Johnson “plays 100 miles an hour every game.”
-Percy Harvin gives Vikes “another explosive receiver.”
-on Adrian Peterson: “every snap that he gets the football he’s going as hard as he did on his best one or worst one.”
-Defensive backs “always have” lots of opportunities to make plays
-”I have great confidence in our secondary”
-Pass rush has “gotta improve.”

11:10-Greetings from Owings Mills; where we are preparing to speak to Ravens coordinators Cam Cameron, Greg Mattison, and Jerry Rosburg shortly. The Ravens are continuing their preparation for Sunday’s trip to Minnesota to face the Vikings. The story of the week is again shaping up to be Jared Gaither’s neck; as he told reporters yesterday he was going to play, but didn’t appear to have particularly improved movement from last week, when he couldn’t move his neck from left to right at all. Gaither again missed practice yesterday, along with Haloti Ngata (back) and Jarret Johnson (shoulder).
