Live From Owings Mills: John Harbaugh’s Weekly Press Conference

September 27, 2010 | Glenn Clark

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — The Baltimore Ravens were back at work Monday at 1 Winning Drive after their 24-17 win over the Cleveland Browns Sunday at M&T Bank Stadium. John Harbaugh met with the media Monday afternoon to look ahead to this weekend’s AFC North showdown with the Pittsburgh Steelers at Heinz Field. Here are some of the highlights…

-Harbaugh said RB Ray Rice suffered a “knee contusion” in the loss. As far as his status for Sunday in the Steel City, Harbaugh said “we’ll have to see how he fares throughout the week” in practice. Should Rice not be able to go Sunday, Willis McGahee would get the bulk of the carries. “I like the way Willis runs” noted Harbaugh, who said McGahee’s size (240 pounds) could give the Ravens offense a different look. Harbaugh also mentioned that Jalen Parmele “can do it to” and FB Le’Ron McClain could also be an option should Rice be out.

-Harbaugh said “I haven’t gotten a read on” DL Cory Redding, who left Sunday’s game with a concussion. Harbaugh said he didn’t believe the team had done any post-concussion tests on Redding yet, and the team would probably give him until closer to practice Wednesday to allow his head to clear up.  Harbaugh also had no update on OT Jared Gaither (back), who missed his third straight game Sunday.

-Harbaugh said DT Terrence Cody could “possibly” play Sunday should Redding be unavailable. “We’ll see how it goes” said the coach. “Terrence (knee) is getting healthier, he practiced well last week. We’ll see how it goes. We want to get him up if we can.” DT’s Arthur Jones and Lamar Divens have also been inactive, they could play in place of Redding as well. Another option would be DE Paul Kruger. “I’m sure when Paul gets activated he’ll play really well” said Harbaugh.

-Regarding the Steelers’ surprising 3-0 record to start the season despite playing without QB Ben Roethlisberger, Harbaugh quickly snapped back “we don’t care. It doesn’t make any difference to us.” Harbaugh said that he believed before the season that the Steelers “were going to be a very good football team” with or without Roethlisberger. “We’re not surprised that they’re 3-0, but we don’t care. We’re going to play the game.” Harbaugh also praised the Pittsburgh defense, saying “there’s no week link” defensively. Harbaugh singled out Steelers safety Troy Polamalu, saying “he has a great knack for changing things up all the time.”
