Live From Owings Mills: Flacco Missed Practice Due to Ankle

October 21, 2009 | Glenn Clark

4:19-One more thing John Harbaugh mentioned today was regarding the practice schedule. Coach told us that the team was planning on practicing this week regardless of what might have happened over the last few weeks. In fact, the team originally planned on practicing tomorrow as well, but they decided against that to allow the players on the team to rest and get healthy.

Could help but see a noticeable limp from Willis McGahee today, and Todd Heap icing his upper arm. Clearly there are guys on the team beyond Jared Gaither, Jarret Johnson and Haloti Ngata who can use the time off health-wise.

1:51-Hear from John Harbaugh and Joe Flacco NOW in the Audio Vault at WNST.net!

1:45-Coach Harbaugh used the last part of his final press gathering of the week to publicly defend Michael Oher-who was criticized Monday by Jared Allen for comments he made after the loss to Minnesota.

Harbs described Oher as “a great kid” who has “tremendous respect” for Jared Allen and the other NFL players he’s gone up against. He believes Michael is just proud to have “held his own” thus far in his NFL career.

Harbaugh made these comments without being questioned about the topic.

1:24-John Harbaugh told us that Joe Flacco hadn’t practiced the last two days due to the ankle injury he suffered Sunday in the loss to the Vikings. Harbaugh said Joe would be good to return to practice on Monday in preparation for the game against the Broncos.

We caught up with Joe before he left the locker room today, and he said his ankle felt “great” today when he was doing dropbacks, and said he would have been playing Sunday if the Ravens had a game (he actually said he could have played today if they had a game).

Joe explained that the injury happened in the 1st quarter-Jared Allen stepped on his left foot, which threw his step off and caused him to “roll” his right ankle. Neither he nor Coach Harbs appeared concerned about the injury.

For the record, Joe is attending Game 5 of the NLCS tonight in Philadelphia. He confirmed he would be rooting for the Phillies.

12:12-Greetings from 1 Winning Drive, where the Ravens are out on the practice field for the final time before having the next 4 days off due to the bye week. A number of players mentioned yesterday that they were most concerned about staying in shape during the time off; as they recognize the fact that their families will probably try to make them food. For the Ravens’ 1st and 2nd year players (including Joe Flacco, Ray Rice, Michael Oher, etc.), this is their first ever NFL bye week-as they lost theirs last year due to the Hurricane in Houston.

The only real storyline is the lack of activity before the trade deadline from Ozzie Newsome and company, but we expected that. John Harbaugh is scheduled to talk at 12:30, and hopefully we will catch a few players before they take off for the long weekend.
