Matt Birk paid the way

March 05, 2009 |

Matt Birk was so interested in being a part of the Ravens that he paid his own way to visit the team.

While the Ravens were talking to Birk about a free-agent visit, he volunteered to pay his own way to the Ravens facility for the visit. Birk’s wife went back to the Minnesota area yesterday, and then once he called her and told her he was going to be a Raven, she brought their kids to Baltimore.

Birk said things feel perfect here with the Ravens. He has been impressed with the facility, the front office, the coaches and even owner Steve Bischotti, who called Birk about a half-hour after he signed the deal to become a Raven.

Birk has some previous connections to the Ravens coaching staff. Coach John Harbaugh had meet Birk at the Pro Bowl a couple of years ago while he was a special teams coach with the Eagles. Craig Ver Steeg, who is currently an offensive assistant with the Ravens, was a coach at Harvard while Birk was there. Birk also is familiar with tight ends coach Wade Harman, who was with the Vikings from 1997-98.
