Mattison in charge of defense and some other changes.

January 26, 2009 |

Coach John Harbaugh announced today that he has hired Greg Mattison to become the Ravens new defensive coordinator replacing Rex Ryan who left to become the new head coach of the New York Jets. Coach Mattison has a connection with the Harbaugh family that dates back to the early 80′s when he coached under Coach Harbaugh’s father Jack. Coach Mattison even pointed out today that he would have not come to the NFL had it not been for Coach John Harbaugh being the head coach.

Jerry Rosburg who is the Ravens special teams coach will have the title of assistant head coach added to his name. Rex Ryan was the previous assistant head coach of the Ravens.

Vic Fangio will become the Ravens linebackers coach for next season, taking over for Coach Mattison. Coach Harbaugh said that Fangio will coach all of the linebackers. Last season Mike Pettine was the outside linebackers coach, but has now moved on to become the defensive coordinator of the New York Jets.

You can hear the entire press conference in the WNST Audio vault. Also, Coach Mattison is scheduled to check in with Nestor around 5 p.m. this evening.
