Monday Morning’s PURPLE Crabs and Beer

October 12, 2009 | Glenn Clark

Doing things a bit differently around here on Mondays from now on. I will ONLY be posting Ravens-based links. You know, because it’s Monday.

I’ll start with a Report Card:

Quarterback: C-

It wasn’t as if Joe played like Derek Anderson yesterday, but he wasn’t good. Part of the problem was that his pocket collapsed a bit. Part of the problem was that the lack of a deep threat kept Derrick Mason from being able to get open. But Joe deserves PLENTY of blame in the loss.

Running Backs: B

The only complaint is that Willis McGahee wasn’t used enough. Ray Rice played really well, showing the jets that make him so dangerous in the open field. You really can’t blame Ray Rice, but you can certainly question how the backs were used.

Wide Receivers/Tight Ends: D+

It’s hard to give a unit a grade when they’re barely involved, but this is on them. Lacking a deep threat has REALLY hurt this team, as the Bengals’ safeties cheated down to take Mason out of the game. It was really a pathetic performance from the unit.

Offensive Line: B-

I actually thought Michael Oher was very good on the day, but Joe Flacco did NOT have enough to throw the ball for the most part. The Ravens also had to go outside to find running room, as there weren’t holes up the middle.

Defensive Line: C

Cedric Benson could have ran all day. I thought Greg Mattison rotated guys out WAY too much, but the guys who were on the field weren’t doing a whole hell of a lot. Haloti Ngata was the one guy who played well.

Linebackers: C

Ray Lewis’ hit was obscene. It was REALLY brutal. He was trying to win the football game with one hit instead of just making a play. It has worked before, but it didn’t work this time. Jarret Johnson was a bright spot, but the unit offered little otherwise.

Secondary: D

Just awful. In fairness, Carson Palmer had PLENTY of time to make throws. But this was a poor performance from this unit; save for Ed Reed’s playmaking.

Coaching: D

This team REALLY appeared out-coached. The Bengals looked better prepared, they looked like they had a better gameplan, and they looked like they made better adjustments.

Let’s see what everyone else has to say….
