Predicting the Ravens’ 53-man roster at the end of preseason

August 29, 2014 | Luke Jones

IN: Haloti Ngata, Chris Canty, Brandon Williams, DeAngelo Tyson, Timmy Jernigan
OUT: A.J. Pataiali’i, Derrick Hopkins, Levi Brown, Jamie Meder
INJURED: Terrence Cody (could be placed on the reserve physically unable to perform list or injured reserve)
Skinny: This is a position where the Ravens could stand to add another veteran as the season-ending injuries to Brent Urban and Kapron Lewis-Moore depleted the 5-technique defensive end spot. Harbaugh was noncommittal when asked if Cody would begin the year on the PUP list, meaning he could be placed on IR if he’s not close to being ready after offseason hip surgery.

IN: Daryl Smith, C.J. Mosley, Elvis Dumervil, Courtney Upshaw, Terrell Suggs, Arthur Brown, Pernell McPhee, Albert McClellan, Josh Bynes, John Simon
OUT: Zachary Orr, D.J. Roberts
Skinny: Simon has been a disappointment as a fourth-round pick from a year ago, but he answered the bell Thursday night if his roster spot was in jeopardy by finishing with a sack and four quarterback hits. The Ravens are wary of giving up on their draft picks too soon, which will help his cause as well. Bynes and McClellan both make it based on their special-teams prowess.

IN: Lardarius Webb, Jimmy Smith, Chykie Brown, Asa Jackson, Derek Cox, Dominique Franks
OUT: Tramain Jacobs, Sammy Seamster
Skinny: This group is difficult to predict not knowing the health status of Webb, Smith, and Jackson. Harbaugh painted an optimistic picture for all three, but the guess is Cox and Franks get the temporary nod as veterans while Newsome explores what else is out there. Even with their top three corners healthy, the Ravens need an upgrade to be in the No. 3 cornerback mix.

IN: Matt Elam, Darian Stewart, Terrence Brooks, Jeromy Miles, Anthony Levine
OUT: Brynden Trawick
SUSPENDED: Will Hill (will be suspended for the first six games of the regular season)
Skinny: Miles did not have a good night against the Saints, but he is a core special-teams player and had a solid summer overall. Levine’s versatility to play safety or corner and his special-teams ability give him the nod over Trawick. If Hill can stay in shape — and out of trouble — during his suspension, he could be an intriguing option once he returns in mid-October.

IN: Sam Koch, Morgan Cox, Justin Tucker
OUT: none
Skinny: There’s no roster drama here, but more than a few Ravens fans and coaches felt their heart skip a beat as Tucker tried to make a tackle in Thursday’s game. You admire the effort, but your Pro Bowl kicker suffering an injury in the final preseason game would have been a devastating development for a strong special-teams unit.
