Ravens Defensive Coordinator

January 19, 2009 |

Now with Rex Ryan leaving to go become the new head coach of the New York Jets, talk is who in house could become the new defensive coordinator if the Ravens decide to go that route.

Here are a couple of possible candidates :

Mike Pettine-Outside Linebackers Coach. It is believed the Coach Pettine will be heading to the Jets with Rex Ryan to become the defensive coordinator of the Jets.

Greg Mattison- Linebackers coach. Coach Mattison was co-defensive coordinator/D-line coach with the University of Florida from 2005-2007. Coach Mattison was also the D-line coach with Notre Dame from 1997-2004.

Chuck Pagano – Secondary coach. Pagano was the defensive coordinator/defensive backs coach at the University of North Carolina. From 2005-2006 he was the defensive backs coach for the Oakland Raiders. Pagano was also the secondary coach for the Cleveland Browns from 2001-2004. Pagano coached Ed Reed while serving as the secondary coach for the University of Miami from 1995- 2000.

Vic Fangio-Special Assistant to the Head Coach –  Fangio served as the defensive coordinator for the Houston Texans from 2002-2005. Was with the Indianapolis Colts as the defensive coordinator from 1999-2001. Fangio also served as defensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers from 1995-1998. While serving with the New Orleans Saints  from 1986-1994, he coached the vaunted Dome Patrol that featured Ricky Jackson, Pat Swilling, Sam Mills, and Vaughan Johnson. That LB unit was voted the best line backing corp in NFL history by the NFL Network.

I would guess the Ravens would fill this position relatively soon with the combine coming up in February.
