Ravens today: They got the veteran wide receiver they were looking for…

August 01, 2009 | Drew Forrester

I’m shocked.  Derrick Mason’s NOT retiring?  Really?

OK, OK, I’m not shocked.

After all, on day one of his “retirement”, I wrote this at WNST.net.  I called it from jump street.

It’s good to have him back and all.  And, frankly, given the death of his close friend on July 4 and some other things going on in his life over the summer, Mason will get what essentially amounts to a free-pass from his teammates when he returns to the field tomorrow in Westminster.

And why shouldn’t he?  This was nothing more than a weekend holdout to make a point.  Nothing more, nothing less.  No harm, no foul.

Mason’s return is sort of like a free agency signing, in a weird kind of way.

When he called it quits on July 13, the Ravens were scrambling for a replacement.  They signed Drew Bennett a couple of weeks ago but that lasted a day and a half.  I’ve played in golf tournaments longer than Bennett was a Raven.

DJ Hackett came in and couldn’t hack-it, evidently (sorry, you knew that was coming).

And now, the Ravens have finally landed that veteran wide receiver they were looking for, only it’s Derrick Mason himself.

It all worked out in the end.

Thank God Drew Bennett’s wife put her foot down, huh?
