Ravens Waive Ali, Move Harper to Active Roster

December 12, 2009 | Glenn Clark

The Baltimore Ravens made a roster move today, waiving FB Charles Ali (we hardly knew ye) and activating WR Justin Harper from the practice squad.

The move was almost certainly made due to Mark Clayton being listed as doubtful for tomorrow’s game against the Detroit Lions with a hamstring injury.

Harper was one of the “bubble” guys to make the roster out of Training Camp, as the 2008 7th round pick in the NFL Draft out of Virginia Tech has been known to make some nice leaping grabs in practice, but has failed to be consistent enough to play. He regularly plays the role of the number one wide receiver of Ravens opponents during practice-he dressed as Calvin Johnson this week. If he plays, he will be making his NFL debut.

At 6’3″, Harper matches Kelley Washington as the tallest WR the Ravens have. Expect Washington to start opposite Derrick Mason, with Demetrius Williams as the #3 guy. Harper and David Tyree will be the Ravens’ next options should they choose to go to a 4th receiver or in an emergency situation.
