Now…to another heartbreaking story from the horse racing industry. #15 on the list is Barbaro, who captured the 2006 Kentucky Derby and was the darling of the Preakness Stakes two weeks later in Baltimore. Ten seconds into the race, the Derby winner was pulled up by jockey Edgar Prado after a serious leg injury. The outpouring of affection for the injured colt was almost immediate, as racing – and non-racing – fans lined Northern Parkway as the trailer left the track with Barbaro inside. As it made its way up I-95 towards Barbaro’s Delaware home, more people stood on overpasses overlooking the interstate waving signs and flags of support. In the weeks following the injury, more support for the horse was on display as thousands of cards and flowers were sent to Barbaro’s farm.
