#WNSTSweet16 list — Who broke our hearts in Baltimore?

February 11, 2014 | Drew Forrester

If ever a picture told a thousand words, it’s the one you see below of #13 on the list, former Orioles first baseman Rafael Palmeiro.  The photo, of course, is the famous statement made by Palmeiro in front of a congressional hearing on steroid use in baseball on March 17, 2005.

“Let me start by telling you this:  I have never used steroids, period.  I don’t know how to say it any more clearly than that.  Never.”

On August 1, 2005, Palmeiro was suspended for 10 days after testing positive for steroids.

It was the biggest blow to an Orioles franchise already littered with PED rumors and connections, including David Segui, Larry Bigbie, Brian Roberts and Jay Gibbons.

In his career, Palmeiro was a member of the 3,000 hit and 500 HR club, yet he has been largely ignored by Hall of Fame voters and will no longer appear on the ballot after failing to receive at least 5% of the votes in 2013.
