#12 is the guy who might have cost Lefty Driesell his coveted NCAA title and the chance to follow through on his promise to make Maryland “the UCLA of the East”.  Malone was drafted by the ABA’s Utah Stars in the summer of ’74 and shunned Maryland for professional basketball, becoming the first “high schooler” to ever make the jump from 12th grade to the pro ranks.  Lefty, of course, never won that elusive NCAA title at Maryland and most followers of Terps basketball think ’74-75 would have been his best chance had Moses Malone not chased the ABA money.
