#WNSTSweet16 Greatest Local Olympic Sport Athletes

1. Michael Phelps, swimming

There was no one else for the top choice as Phelps is the most decorated Olympian ever with a remarkable total of 18 gold medals and 22 overall. To put his greatness in perspective, his 11 individual gold medals would rank him tied for 15th among the individual totals of the 50 states.

To add to his unbelievable list of Olympic accomplishments, Phelps has collected 27 gold medals in world championship competition and has set 39 world records in his career. His success has earned him mainstream popularity unlike any other athlete in his sport as he’s appeared regularly in commercials and has become one of the Ravens’ most popular fans.

Another name for consideration would be Larry Surock. Baltimore Native, Patterson High Grad, UB All American and member of the 1952 US Olympic Soccer Team.
He is in the UB Athletic Hall of Fame and the MD Soccer Hall of Fame.
He should at least be mentioned with this group.
