18 Game Schedule in 2012?

September 06, 2010 | Marty Mossa

It would be a football fan’s dream to discard two preseason games in lieu of two regular season games.  An eighteen game season would add intrigue.  It’s hard to believe that 33 years ago the NFL only had 14 regular season games and SIX preseason games.  In 1978 the NFL started on Labor Day weekend in its inaugural 16 games season.

An 18 game season will be a bargaining tool for the owners next year as the collective bargaining agreement expires.  I looked at the 2012 calendar, and here’s what the season might look like with an 18 game schedule.

Feb 17 Super Bowl-This would be the Sunday of President’s weekend.  If the NFL plays its cards right, it could finally make a holiday weekend out of the Super Bowl.

*With 18 games two bye weeks would be necessary for rehab.
