The CHC Varsity Baseball Team will be in California March 22nd till the 27th for the Anderson Bat Co. National Classic High School Baseball Tournament. The National Classic has become respected as one of HS Baseball’s BEST tourney’s in the Nation. Calvert Hall will be playing for the first time in this prestigious event. The Cardinals of Baltimore/Towson will be slugging away against some of the nations best baseball programs.
First and foremost I think we all should TIP OUR HATS to Coach Eckerl for his ability to not just get the best players in the area to play for him but for his ability to “bring out the best” in his players. Coach Eckerl was Honored this winter by the Oldtimers Baseball Association and Awarded the JOHN STEADMAN High School Coach Award and rightfully so. The award was presented to Coach Eckerl by John Steadman’s brother Tom Steadman. Keep up the great work Coach Eckerl!
In 2007, the entire CHC baseball program went a collective 75-0. The Cadinals finished the season as USA Today’s #4 ranked team. The 2008 first National Ranking announcment by Baseball America has the Cardinals at #2 in the country! This season they are positioned to prove themselves as the #1 HS Team in the Nation. Soon we will see the new “Crispino Stadium” open and be a spectacular venue to watch the area’s finest MIAA teams playing ball! Get out and watch some of these games as the 2008 Varsity squad has 8 senior starters returning including the Baltimore Sun’s 2007 “Player of the Year” Kevin Lingerman. This kid is very special. He has a great story that well, will be better told at another time. Just remember this kid! In addition, the Calvert Hall Community should be very proud of this fine group of young men going to California stepping up to the Challenge, to face other nationally ranked teams like Orange Lutheran HS (CA), Cottonwood HS (UT), Christian Brothers HS (TN) and tough Co-host Esperanza HS (CA) and Co-host El Dorado HS (CA). Another team in this great tournament is Calvert Hall’s rivals from Wash. DC. The nationally ranked, St John’s College HS, coached by my friend Coach Mark Gibbs.
I spoke to Mark last week about the National Classic since he went out with his guy’s last year and he said that the California teams are very strong. He said that they face stiffer competition over the course of the HS season than the MD and VA teams do. Probably because of the great weather in California.
Just the same though, Calvert Hall is going out there to kick some ass. If I know Lew Eckerl, I know he has his guys ready to go out and “step on some throats”.
Go get’em Cards.
Hit it square!
