An Amazing Streak Comes to an End

September 01, 2008 |

Sunday afternoon in Cincinnati Ohio Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh lost a beach volleyball match for the first time since August 19, 2007. They lost to Elaine Youngs and Nicole Branagh 21-19, 10-21, and 25-23. The match lasted 105 minutes which is the second longest in AVP history.

The last game was only supposed to go to 15 but neither team could get the necessasary 2 point lead. Even when the last point had to be replayed after the ball struck a boom camera Youngs and Branagh kept it togther and got the win.

The win streak included a gold medal run in Beijing. They became the first beach volleyball team to win back to back gold medals and didn’t drop a game in the process. May-Treanor/Walsh had an 89 match and 15 tournament win streak snapped before the 2004 Olympics.

In their post match interview they could have used one of a laundry list of excuses for the loss including jet lag, appearances on Good Morning America,  David Letterman and the Today Show. Also Misty May is in training for the upcoming season of “Dancing with the Stars.” Instead of using these excuses they credited their opponents and will look to start another streak next week.

If you think this isn’t a big deal you better tell that to ESPN who has mentioned this on Sportscenter and is running it with the scores on the bottom line of all their channels
