Another EPL season starts tomorrow

August 14, 2009 |

Tomorrow morning at 7:45 AM Hull City and Chelsea kick off the 10 month struggle known as the English Premier League season. By the way if you know who is televising that game please leave me a comment. In this blog I am going to preview my beloved Manchester United and make picks for the top 5 and the bottom 3 teams.

Lets start with United. The Red Devils enter the season with more questions than answers. Who is going to make up for the loss of Cristiano Ronaldo? Can Ben Foster hold the fort until Edwin Van Der Sar gets healthy? Which Van Der Sar will play once he comes back? Will Vidic and Ferdinand stay solid in the back? Will they miss Carlos Tevez?

I think the key players for United this season are Wayne Rooney and Kiko Macheda. Rooney has begged for the chance to play further up the pitch. This year he gets his wish. He needs to make this a good move with more production. He is being counted on to make up for some of the Ronaldo goals.  Macheda started his career at United with 3 game winning goals last season. This year he will be counted on to support Berbatov and Rooney. He needs to take advantage when Sir Alex plays him by creating chances and converting on them.

The defensive end also has questions as I mentioned above. Ben Foster has  a lot of pressure on him. He is United and England’s keeper of the future. Sir Alex has talked a big game for him and he needs to back it up. Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic aren’t getting any younger. Vidic is already going to miss the first couple of games with an injury. The United defense suffers when the two of them aren’t playing. There are communication problems and they aren’t organized. Edwin Van Der Sar needs to play like the guy who had the long streak of clean sheets not the guy who let in some soft goals at the end of last season.

These questions are why I can’t pick them to win their fourth title in a row. Here is my top five teams. 1. Chelsea, 2. Man United, 3 Liverpool, 4 Man City, and 5 Arsenal.

For the bottom three I think Hull City will go down because they won’t get off to the amazing start that saved them last season. I also see Stoke and Birmingham making the drop. If one of these teams make safety I see Portsmouth and Wolves as the two teams above the drop. We will see how I did come May?

Do you agree or disagree with my preview and picks? Leave a comment one way or the other. I guess there is one thing left to say

“Glory, Glory Man United!!”
