Argentina at Brazil (yes, that’s soccer!)

June 18, 2008 | Nestor Aparicio

An entire continent will stop at 8:45 tonight. I know that sounds trite, but it’s true. A couple of hundred million people will be tuning into a soccer match between the two prides of the South American continent – Brazil and Argentina.

I don’t need to get into the players – inarguably the best in the world and some of the most famous names in the sport – but suffice to say that it’ll be some of the best soccer that the planet can afford, and a World Cup qualifier no less. The atmosphere will be worth the money to order it on Comcast!

Brazil has drilled the Argentines a few times recently, so it’s a grudge match as well.

I have to be honest: I’ve been caught up in soccer mania ever since the Euro Cup began two weeks ago. Every day there have been amazing games and watching France get eliminated against Italy was fun yesterday. And the more I get around town the more I find that more people are watching and supporting soccer on the world stage.

The games this weekend at 2:45 will be crazy good: Netherlands will take on the Russia-Sweden winner on Saturday and Italy will play Spain on Sunday. Both classic!

I’m not an expert – just the opposite, actually. A casual guy who loves sports and thinks it’s amazing to watch these stadiums and these countries come to life on the pitch. It’s fanatical, loud and now in HD most days!

Is anyone else out there awaiting this weekend’s games in Europe or watching the South American qualifiers?

Soccer is one of those things that I think a lot of people watch but don’t talk about.

Well…

I gotta get back to Russia-Sweden!
