Baseball Needs Instant Replay

June 05, 2010 | Marty Mossa

Major League Baseball just can’t get out of its own way can it?   As Armando Galarraga of the Detroit Tigers was ready to celebrate a perfect game with his team mates, umpire Jim Joyce rained on his celebration.  With two outs in the 9th, Cleveland Indian shortstop Jason Donald grounded to first base in what appeared to be a routine ground out.  The throw beat him by a step.  Umpire Jim Joyce called him safe, thus ending Galarraga’s bit for a perfect game.

Now I didn’t watch the game.  But for something this important, why didn’t the umpires huddle and try to get the call right?  If baseball would keep up with the times, they would have instant replay.  The replay clearly showed that Donald was out.  MLB can’t get out of its own way.

If Bud Selig had any testicles, he would reverse that call.  I don’t believe he should reverse every blown call an umpire makes.  That would be stupid.  But for something this important (ie a perfect game) he should make a huge exception and do it.  I don’t follow MLB.  But if I did, as a fan I would be outraged by this inaction by the commissioner.

Hey Bud:  REVERSE THE CALL!!!!!!!
