Bergy’s back, but Tillman and Arrieta loom

May 01, 2010 |

Brad Bergeson is back in the O’s rotation after his brief exile to Norfolk. His performance on Saturday night was a huge improvement over his April efforts, but still far from impressive. He allowed 4 runs in 5 innings to the Red Sox.

Bergeson will need to continue improving on those numbers if he has any hope of staying in the Orioles rotation. Chris Tillman just tossed a No-hitter for AAA Norfolk and may have finally found his groove after being a late cut in Spring Training. Let’s not forget Jake Arrieta, another top prospect who has been lights out thus far for the Tides.

Saturday’s demotion of Jim Johnson should serve notice to the remaining members of the O’s pitching staff. If you don’t perform at the Major League level there are finally arms in the Minors that can, and will, take your job. I fully expect Tillman and Arrieta to be in the Orioles rotation before August with David Hernandez moving to the bullpen and Jeremy Guthrie possibly traded.
