Blast Win

Tonight the Baltimore Blast played host to the Missouri Comets at 1st Mariner Arena. The Blast come into the game having started the season 2-0 and are looking to continue their great play to start the season. The Missouri Comets are 1-3 and hoping to turn around their season before it gets away from them.

As usual, the crowd was pretty good with lots of kids. It’s fun to see the kids walk around the field before the game in the “Parade of Champions”. They all seem to be having a good time. Attendance for the game was a vocal 6,236.

The Blast added a member to their Hall of Fame tonight. Doug Neeley was a Blast defender from 92-92, 96-97, 98-02. He played in 239 games, had 54 goals and 80 assists for a total of 183 points. He also represented the Blast in 3 All-Star games. Doug Neeley is a great addition to the Blast Hall of Fame.

The game started fast for the Blast. At 2:07 in the first quarter Adauto Neto scored off a set play to give the Blast an early 2-0 lead. The Comets respond at 4:48 by an unassisted break-away goal by Vahid Assadpour. This was a 3 point shot, so the Comets took the lead. At 7:50, the Blast was awarded a penalty shot on a hand ball by the Comets. Machel Millwood scored and the Blast went back on top 4-3. Just 12 seconds later, the Comets take the lead back 5-4. At 9:04 left in the first quarter, Blast defense made a huge mistake and the Comets took advantage with another 3 point goal. Its 8-4 Comets and that’s how the fast paced first quarter ended.

The second quarter had lots of action, but no scoring….kinda like the Ravens offense. Halftime score was 8-4 Comets over the Blast.

The 3rd quarter saw the Comets play really well to start the quarter only to have the Blast keep them out of the goal. Then, the Blast played better but they couldn’t score either. At 13:27 the Comet score on a break away to go ahead 10-4. Seconds later, the Comets make a costly defensive mistake and Blast forward Max Ferdinand scores a 3 point goal. The 3rd quarter ended with the Comets still ahead 10-7.

Blast forward Giuliano Celenza scores early in the 4th quarter to get the score to 10-9 . Minutes later the Blast take the lead. Forward Pat Healey scored on a follow up shot and lead the Comets 11-10. 1st Mariner started to make some real noise. The crowd seemed to be spurring the Blast on. With one wave of attack after the other, Blast forward Adauto Neto scored to put the Blast up 13-10 with 7:45 to go in the game. That’s 9 straight points for the Blast. With a little over 2 minutes to go, the Comets pull their goalie for an extra player. That puts pressure on the Blast, and it works. With 4.7 seconds to go in the game, the Comets score a 2 point goal to get the score to 13-12 Blast. But, that’s as close as it gets. Blast win 13-12. Great Game.
