Well, let me just say this is the exact reason I don’t bet. A couple hours ago, I acknowledged that Richard Childress Racing would still be the most logical destination for Dale Earnhardt Jr., in 2008. If asked, I would have said Hendrick Motorsports was the least likely.
Fast forward to now and we are hearing reliable sources say Earnhardt is indeed joining Hendrick. For those of you living under a rock, Hendrick Motorsports currently fields cars for Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Kyle Busch and Casey Mears. Umm …. yeah, I said Jeff Gordon.
It’s no secret that Earnhardt and Gordon are the featured personalities in this sport and they’re extremely careful not to cross paths, except on the racetrack. They share one common sponsor …. Chevrolet. They only appear together if forced to do so by NASCAR. Thus, this should be interesting.
Rick Hendrick better build an addition to the team’s headquarters, to contain these two egos. Then again, he’ll need extra space for all the merchandise, as well. He’s gonna get filthy rich (or richer) off these guys and this deal. But, the personalities meshing will be an interesting event, or will it?
Do you think I’m kidding about the merchandising? Minutes after it was announced, my wife drug me to our nearest NASCAR retailer – WALMART – for her new Dale Jr. shirt. What a scene …. does every WALMART attract the “Sunday Morning Flea Market” crowd? Good grief, I need a shower !!!!
At any rate, congratulations to Dale Earnhardt Jr . – you’re joining the most prestigious race team in the sport. No more excuses …. you are expected to win.
