Caps MUST At Least Split In New York

April 16, 2011 | Marty Mossa

It was a very good win last night at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C.  The Caps made easy work of the New York Rangers and won 2-0.    Jason Chimera scored at 2:11 of the second period, and Jason Arnott scored at 4:08 of the same period.  The Caps played solid defense as goalie Michal Neuvirth was perfect throwing the shut out with 22 saves.

We as Caps fans can savor this win for a short time.  The Capitals and Rangers will faceoff tomorrow at Madison Square Garden at 3pm on NBC.  Being a student of the Capitals’ playoff history, I think they should approach tomorrow’s game as a must win.  I don’t have the exact numbers, but the Capitals have blown at least four 2-0 leads, and at least 3-1 leads in the post season.  In 1985 they blew a another 2-0 when the first round was the best of five.  The only thing they haven’t blown (knock on wood) is a 3-0 lead.  And we all know they are capable of it.  If the Caps lose both games in New York, they will lose ther series.

So my advice to Washington would be this:

·         Know your propensity to squander playoff leads,

·         Play each game like its game 7.

·         Don’t allow the Rangers to jump back into this series.  Win at MSG tomorrow.
