Caps News: Nylander Out for Season

January 16, 2008 | Ed Frankovic

Sorry to interrupt all of the Ravens coverage but breaking news just in from the Verizon Center:

Caps F Michael Nylander, who was signed for $5.5M for the next 3 years and $3M for a 4th year, is out for the season due to rotator cuff surgery.

While I am not a huge Nylander fan, especially at this salary, this loss is a MAJOR hit to the Caps playoff chances.

End of 1st period update: GM George McPhee, when speaking to the media this evening, said that the Caps will go with what they have on the roster for the rest of the season. My thoughts: If the Caps can find a way to just stay in the playoff race, which they very well could do given the play of Ovechkin, Backstrom, and Green plus the poor play of other teams in the Southeast Division, then it would be wise for McPhee to try and make a deadline deal (Feb 26) to improve the team’s chances. McPhee’s job could depend on the team making the playoffs.
