Casey at the bat: Come on down, Melvin Mor

May 26, 2007 |

You’re the next contestant on the "get a night off" game.

Melvin Mora will be out of the Orioles lineup tonight as Aubrey Huff will take his place at 3rd base. Sam Perlozzo said that it is partly a night off for Melvin, and partly because his numbers are not that great against tonight’s starter, Danny Haren.

Sam said that it is likely that Jay Gibbons and Aubrey Huff will be getting a night or two off coming up very soon. Sam also added that he has talked to Miguel about taking a night off in the field and DHing, but Miguel prefers to be playing the field instead of having to concentrate on just hitting.

I asked Sam if he noticed certain players prefer to not DH because of feeling like they are not in the game. He said Aubrey likes to just DH where has Millar prefers to play the field instead of just hitting. Sam went on to say that it can be hard because he wants to keep Huff sharp defensively.

As far as giving guys a day off Sam said he like to give the player a day or so notice that they are going to not be in the lineup so that it does not come as a surprise when they see the lineup in the clubhouse.
