Game recap: It got a little hectic in the final minute when Hartford cut a 12-point deficit in half with 0:57 to play, but UMBC came through at the foul line in the game’s final half minute and hung on for a 69-60 win over the Hawks at the RAC Arena. UMBC (8-8, 2-2/America East) controlled the game throughout the second half but Hartford wouldn’t go away. For most of the night it was the Jay Greene-Darryl Proctor show as the two seniors guided the Retrievers through a hard first half, with the Hawks (6-12, 2-2) coming back to Baltimore seeking to avenge last year’s conference tournament loss to UMBC.
On the night, Greene led UMBC with 17 points while Proctor contributed 14 points and 14 rebounds. If they’re not the best 1-2 combo in the league, I’d like to know who is.
UMBC now embarks on a tough 3-game road stretch that will take them to three of the America East’s best programs and toughest home venues – at Vermont this Monday, at Boston University on Thursday and at Albany next Sunday.
The Retrievers return home on Wednesday, January 28 to take on Binghamton.
All in all, an excellent night of college basketball here at the RAC, with an excellent, lively crowd of 2,464 on hand to see the Retrievers get a much-needed victory.
6:45/second half: It’s the Jay Greene-Darryl Proctor show at UMBC tonight…Greene has 19 and Proctor has 13 as the Retrievers are on the verge of a good win at home vs. Hartford. It’s 59-45 in favor of UMBC with just under 6 minutes to go now.
13:04/second half: UMBC has moved out to a 47-39 lead tonight at the RAC. Jay Greene leads the Retrievers with 13 points while Darryl Proctor has 11. It’s looking like UMBC is ready to take control of this one unless Hartford can solve the Greene-Proctor duo.
Halftime – UMBC leads 33-29 at the RAC. Outstanding first half of basketball from both teams.
3:38/first half: Heckuva basketball game here at the RAC tonight. UMBC up 26-23 behind Darryl Proctor’s 9 points and 6 rebounds through nearly 17 minutes of the first half. Up and down action with both teams going hard to the hoop. It’s pretty evident Hartford still remembers the whipping they took last March.
7:41/first half: UMBC now up 18-16 behind Jay Greene and Darryl Proctor (who else?) – as the two have combined for the Retrievers’ last 7 points. Really good crowd here tonight. Very LIVELY and an entertaining game so far. UMBC has done a really nice job of capitalizing on last year’s outstanding season – good interaction with the school band at the game and there’s a lot of noise and activity here tonight. It’s fun to watch local college hoops in an environment like this.
11:56 left in the first half: UMBC trails early, 11-9. Chauncey Gilliam is off to a nice start for the Retrievers with 5 points but Hartford’s quickness in transition has hurt UMBC thus far. Morgan Sabia leads the Hawks with 5.
The UMBC women pulled out a 10-point win over visiting Maine this afternoon.
Let’s see if the men’s team can do the same against Hartford tonight at the RAC.
There’s an outstanding crowd tonight here at UMBC and they should be seeing a good basketball game.
Hartford comes in at 2-1 in America East play while the Retrievers are 1-2 after Wednesday’s loss at New Hampshire.
It was Hartford who fell victim to UMBC’s run through the America East tournament last March, losing in the Championship final, 82-65, here at the RAC.
I hope I’m wrong on this one, but just for you-know-whats-and-giggles, I call it: Hartford 79-UMBC 71
