Earlier today the Cubs optioned 1b/3b Chad Tracy to AAA to make room for top SS prospect Starlin Castro. Tracy made the club out of Spring Training, but was just 6 for 22 so far in 2010. A couple of years ago Tracy was an up and coming young corner infielder for the Diamondbacks. However, after hitting 20 home runs and knocking in 80 runs in 2006 Tracy has missed at least 60 games in each of the past 3 seasons.
Given Andy MacPhail’s relationship with Cubs GM Jim Hendy and his threat to send down non-performers to Norfolk I wouldn’t be shocked if Tracy were an Orioles before the end of the weekend. He’s got some pop if he can stay healthy and the cost to acquire him would probably be minimal. Chad Tracy certainly wouldn’t save the Orioles’ season, but he’s probably a better option than Luke Scott at DH or Rhyne Hughes at 1st.
