Could Garrett be taking a return flight to Baltimore ? Here is my theory

January 16, 2008 |

So at 5:00 p.m this evening, I felt that when Jason Garrett walked out the door that maybe it was for good.

Well, I have had a different train of thought this evening.

So let’s assume Jason got on a plane tonight headed to Atlanta. He basically admitted that he got offered the job here in Baltimore. So Jason goes to Atlanta, keeps his word to Arthur Blank, sees what the Falcons have to offer and then contacts the Ravens.

Here are a couple of factors that stick out to me:

  1. It was sort of weird how available Jason was made to the media today. None of the other candidates except John Harbaugh were available to the media during the interviewing process.
  2. I think the offer to Jason will continue to stand and that he is still the top candidate here in Baltimore.
  3. The next 24 hours could be telling to see what happens with Atlanta and Jason and if he decides to come back to Baltimore later this week.
  4. The Ravens sort of admitted that they have nothing planned as far as interviews go for the next day or so, as Ozzie Newsome goes to the East-West game in Houston. If Jason calls back and says he wants the job, Ozzie does not have to be here for that.
Again pure conspiracy theory on my part, but I think Jason Garrett goes to Atlanta, visits with them, talks to the Ravens again about their offer and possibly returns in the next 24-to-48 hours to become the Ravens next head coach.
He clearly could go back to Dallas where he could get a raise and whether next year if the Cowboys go 6-10 and he gets named the new head coach, or the Cowboys win the Super Bowl and he continues to be the top candidate for a coaching opening, it is a win-win for him.
So maybe when Jason Garrett walked out of the media center at around 5 p.m., we may not have seen him for the last time.
