Curing Cancer ….. One Call At A Time

June 30, 2009 |

Well, you’ve been hearing about it during the Sunday Morning Blitz. And, you’ve been hearing about it throughout the day, on

You’ve probably been reading about it on Facebook. And, you’ll be seeing it on the homepage, as early as Wednesday evening.

But, it’s high time I’ve blogged about it.

Trust me, I’m gonna rock-a-blog it over the course of the next ELEVEN days.

Indeed, you’re gonna know everything about our charity event, “Curing Cancer ….. One Call At A Time,” which benefits Harbor Hospital’s HarborView Cancer Center. It’s a 24-Hour Marathon, and the goal is simple – have A LOT of fun and raise A LOT of money for the people of our city.

I’m gonna grab the microphone at WNST, starting at 12 noon on Saturday, July 11th and I’m not letting go, until we cross the finish line at 12 noon on Sunday, July 12th. And, as predicted, Jason Jubb will be right there with me.

And, just like the Beatles, we’re gonna get by with a little help from our friends …..

Those friends include some WNST staff, who have graciously volunteered their services during the event. Drew is gonna drop in during evening. Ray and Thyrl have reserved some airtime during the overnight hours. And, Bob will probably crank call us a few times – or he might show up, incognito, a little later in the evening. Keep reading, you’ll understand.

But, most importantly, our friends really consist of YOU. Without our devoted WNST listeners and your cache’ of family and friends, this event would be doomed from the start. But, we know where your heart is …..

It’s right here, in Baltimore, right ???

During the marathon, we’ll be talking with some of the most interesting guests in the world of sports, along with cancer advocates in show business. It’s gonna be a diverse and entertaining group. I promise.

However, the guests won’t make the show a success. You will. We need your support. Please call and participate in the show. Please call and share your story. Please call and give whatever you can afford.

There will be three distinct ways to donate money …..

1) Go to and click on the “Curing Cancer ….. One Call At A Time” logo. You will be directed to the events page, and specifically, the marathon’s page. Simply click on the PayPal tab and you’re all set.

2) OR …. mail your tax-deductible check or money order to WNST, 1550 Hart Rd., Towson, Md. 21286. Please call or email us to make the pledge. And, please mail your donation by Monday, July 13th.

3) OR …. stop by WNST, during the marathon, and share your story with us. Please only bring checks or money orders. No cash.

It’s really that simple. And, please know, you can make your donation in the memory of a loved one or to thank a caregiver. We’ll be happy to relay your message, on-air.

I know some doubters are sitting back and saying “how are they gonna do this?” Better yet, you’re saying “at 3am, they’ll be staring at each other with bloodshot eyes.” Not a chance …..

In fact, when midnight rings, the party is just beginning. We’ll have some pretty cool gifts on hand for our overnight callers and guests. Yep, I said guests ….. as in visitors to the station.

Imagine you’re listening to the show at 3am and we offer something very, very cool to the first guest who visits the WNST station. Ahh, but there’s a catch. To claim the super-cool prize, that visitor will need to be wearing a pair of signature David Lee Roth leather chaps and sing three lines from their favorite Van Halen song, on-air.

Hey, it’s all for a good cause.

Who knows, we might make it a little easier. Perhaps, we’ll offer some great swag to the first caller who can sing the theme to Gilligan’s Island, but you’ve gotta switch the names with the WNST staff.

The bigger the prize, the harder the task …..

Remember, these fun tasks and giveaways will only occur overnight. During the other portions of the show, we want to stick to sports, good debates, insightful interviews and your participation.

Honestly, the show has a very serious and heartfelt commitment. In truth, the disease of cancer has touched virtually everyone. If you’ve never brushed up against it, you’re the exception, not the rule. And, God knows, you’re very fortunate.

This world, this state and most specifically, this city has fallen victim to the hell of cancer’s wrath. We must find a cure. It’s far more important than any game score or championship. It’s the challenge of a lifetime.

Over the next week, I will be briefing you on the guests we’ve booked and further scheduled activities. In the meantime, I’m asking for two favors …..

1) Please tell everyone you know about this event.

2) Please go to my Facebook page or the Sunday Morning Blitz page and copy the “WNST/Curing Cancer ….. One Call At A Time Logo.” Please make it your profile pic, through Sunday, July 12th. Trust me, this will spread the message.

It doesn’t cost a dime to make this logo your profile pic. But, it will reach so many people. Please do this, TODAY.

You never know, the money raised during our event might just benefit your family or friend, in the near future. Believe me, I certainly hope that’s not the case. But, cancer touches all of us. It’s time for a cure.

It’s all about helping people ….. It’s all about fighting cancer ….. It’s all about Baltimore
