Derby Preview: Mock Morning Line Odds

April 29, 2008 | Gary Quill

OK, now that the dust has begun to settle following the NFL Draft and the countless ”Mock Draft” scenarios that were tossed around like bags of peanuts at Camden Yards, I need to counter with a “Mock Derby Morning Line Odds” list.

Even though the 134th running of the Kentucky Derby is still beyond mention on radio airwaves, except in Louisville, horse players everywhere have begun their  research into the probable starters past performances, to find the winner and some “price” horses to complete their exotic wager of choice… Exacta, Trifecta or Superfecta.

Well, before you can find those “price” horses, you need to know who they are. The only way to gauge is by the Morning Line Odds provided by Churchill Downs Program Odds Maker, Mike Battaglia. Unfortunately, this information won’t become available until AFTER the Derby Post Position Draw on Wednesday evening.

Do not fret. Below is my “Mock Mike Battaglia Morning Line Odds” opinion. Probable starters are listed in alphabetical order.

Adriano                     6-1
Anak Nakal               70-1
Big Brown                  2-1
Big Truck                  40-1
Bob Black Jack          12-1
Colonel John              5-2
Cool Coal Man           15-1
Court Vision              25-1
Cowboy Cal              20-1
Denis Of Cork           30-1
Eight Belles (f)          25-1
Gayego                     5-1
Monba                      10-1
Pyro                          4-1
Recapturetheglory     50-1
Smooth Air               35-1
Tale Of Ekati              8-1
Visionaire                 12-1
Z Fortune                 25-1
Z Humor                  60-1

I’m always curious to see how close I come to the actual opinion of the Professional Odds Maker AND then after the race compare both to the actual betting odds to see who had a better handle on how the public would bet.

Now you have no excuse for not being prepared on Saturday to make your Derby wager.

I’ll post my complete Derby analysis and selections either late Friday evening or Saturday morning.

I want to hear who you like and why!
